Picture of the Day: A Break in the Clouds

A BREAK IN THE CLOUDS

Photograph by Jeffrey Pang on Flickr

In this fabulous capture by Jeffrey Pang, we see two canoers paddling through Lake Louise as a break in the clouds reveals the majestic Victoria Glacier in the background. Lake Louise is a glacial lake located in Banff National Park in the province of Alberta, Canada.

Like many of the lakes in the Rockies, the water is either deep green or blue. This is caused by fine sediments called “rock flour” floating in the water. Rock flour is fine powdery rock that has been crushed and ground by a glacier. In this case, Lake Louise is fed by the glacial runoff from the Victoria Glacier.
