Beneath the Wave: Underwater Photos of Swimmers

Mark Tipple is the photographer and filmmaker behind ‘The Underwater Project‘, an ongoing reportage showcasing Australia’s relationship with the ocean. Tipple explains the serendipitous moment it all began:

“I was bored of shooting empty waves. One day, I was caught inside by a big wave and as I dove underwater I suddenly thought I’d see what the kids next to me were going through – I turned the camera on them. That first image remains one of my strongest – I realised immediately that it was close to what I had been looking for ten years ago on my first surfing road trip.”

The project has become quite popular online. You can now order prints, order a collectors edition book and keep track of the latest pictures on Facebook, Instagram and of course theunderwaterproject.com
