A Giant Globe Made Entirely of Matches

American artist Andy Yoder created this incredible world globe made entirely of matches. Completed in 2014 after two years of work, the sculpture, entitled Early One Morning, measures an impressive 42″ in diameter.

The frame is made from cardboard and foam inside a plywood skeleton. Each match is glued at the bottom to the frame and each match head is individually painted, as Yoder was unable to source match heads in his desired colors. For those concerned about the sculpture being set ablaze, the entire piece is doused in flame retardant.

For those that want to see Early One Morning in-person, the sculpture will be on display from May 8 – 11, 2014 at the PULSE New York Contemporary Art Fair. Andy is represented by the Winkleman Gallery in New York.
