Artist Only Uses 12 Inch Nails to Create Sculptures

 

“Only nails, always different”, explains artist John Bisbee to American Craft (pg 45). For the last 30 years the artist has been exclusively welding nails together and for the last decade he has only worked with 12-inch ‘bright common spikes’, which are the largest and most commercially available nails.

As an art student Bisbee discovered his medium of choice by accident. At the time he was making what he called, “really bad found-object sculptures”, and while scavenging in an abandoned house for materials, Bisbee kicked over a bucket of rusty nails and found that the nails had been rusted together to maintain the bucket’s shape. He tells American Craft:

“A nail, like a line, can and will do almost anything. What can’t you draw with a line? The nail is just my line.”
