Some people read a lot into how other people phrase things. Sometimes, maybe their assumptions are correct, but other times, they might be inferring way too much and worrying way too much about a way someone says something that really isn’t a big deal.
In today’s story, one dad was concerned about how his wife referred to their children, so he called her out on it. Now, he’s wondering if he was wrong for saying anything.
Let’s read the whole story.
AITA for questioning my wife for the way she refers to our kids?
My wife and I struggled with infertility for a few years and ended up adopting our first son before she got pregnant with twins through IVF.
But one thing that I’ve noticed recently is how she always refers to our kids by separating them, as in “I’m taking (son’s name) and the twins to the park”, instead of “I’m taking the children to the park”, and that’s something that stood out to me even though our son never said anything about it.
I don’t want to feed a possible feeling of inadequacy. I could have said the same thing if our first son was our biological child as well.
His wife took it completely differently than he expected.
So I talked to my wife about it.
We were at home, it was just the two of us.
To my surprise, she took it as if I was suggesting she treats them differently and that the adoption might have influenced her, which I know it’s not the case – we both treat them exactly the same.
I was just suggesting she was careful with how she phrases this, more as a precaution. But now I feel like I could have been an AH over something that might be nothing.
If anything, the twins could be offended since the mom refers to them as “the twins” instead of by name. I think this dad is really overthinking things and being nitpicky about nothing.
Let’s see how Reddit reacted to this story.

Nobody seems to think the mom’s phrasing is concerning.
A twin shares her experience.
This dad has nothing to worry about.
