A Growing Number Of Women Are Choosing Not To Take Their Husbands Name At Marriage, And One TikToker Wants To Know Why

Taking last names

When a couple gets married, it has been a long-standing tradition that the wife gives up her maiden name and takes on her husband’s last name.

There are many reasons for this, including the fact that they are starting their life together as a family, but it is becoming less common these days.

One TikToker didn’t plan on taking her husband’s last name, and she wondered what reasons people had for not sticking to this tradition.

She made a video asking the internet about it, and got thousands of responses.

The video itself was pretty brief and just had the caption saying, “This is no tea no shade. But for my girls who didn’t change their last name, I want to hear your reason why.”

A reasonable question.

The caption went on to say, “I never considered it because this was my given name, I never understood why it would change for someone else. But curious for other reasons.”

There are many reasons people give to answer this type of question.

In the description of the video she also asked about why people do change it, saying, “Let’s hear it! Your reasons for not changing it or honestly for changing it. Very curious.”

It is a good question to ask.

The tradition has been around for a long time, so just not following it for no reason may not be a good idea.

Likewise, following it for no reason could be a mistake. So asking the question is good.

This person has a funny (but honest) answer.

Lots of people said things about their degrees.

Another somewhat humorous (and completely honest) answer.

Is it time to question these longstanding traditions?
