Building a trustworthy business takes time, effort, and an actual track record of success. But in this story, one aspiring entrepreneur wanted to skip straight to the results.

One man was asked by his younger brother to let him use his name for a new landscaping business, banking entirely on his local reputation to make the company look credible from day one.

He turned it down, explaining that he had nothing to do with landscaping and didn’t want people assuming otherwise.

His brother brushed off the concern, calling it “just a name,” while family pressure pushed him to just go along with it anyway.

When he offered real help instead, brainstorming an actual name, even designing a logo, his brother wasn’t interested in any of it.

My younger brother recently wanted to start a small landscaping business and asked if he could use my name for it.

He said people knew me around here a lot, so it would make the business seem more trustworthy.

This man could hardly believe what he was hearing, so he told it to his brother straight.

I actually thought he was joking at first.

I told him I wasn’t comfortable with it because I have nothing to do with landscaping and didn’t want people thinking I was involved in his company.

Not that I don’t want to support him, but he should just trust himself that everything will work out.

His brother didn’t understand his point of view at all, and even started turning their mom against him.

He said I was making a big deal out of nothing and that it was “just a name.”

My mom also thinks I should let him do it since it could help him get started.

He thinks there are plenty of other ways to help besides this, but his brother still refuses to reason with him.

I offered to help him come up with another name and even said I’d help with a logo, but he wasn’t interested at all with the help I offered.

Now he’s telling our family I’m refusing to support him over something really minor.

I want him to succeed, but I don’t think supporting my brother means putting my name on a business I have nothing to do with.
