Instagram Interaction Turns Into Heated Argument After Artist Takes Offense at Multiple Likes

I didn’t know liking too many posts at the same time was considered rude. Is there a social media etiquette rule book I didn’t know about?

Well, I’m not the only one confused about this. A woman shared how she really liked an artist’s work, so she just went and liked a bunch of their posts… only to receive an angry comment from them.

The artist apparently did not interpret her enthusiasm as a compliment.

The situation escalated, and now she’s confused.

AITA for liking someone’s art?

I (24F) liked a lot of someone’s art on Instagram yesterday and they proceeded to get really mad at me for liking too much of their art at one time.

Note: I’m not going to mention the artist’s name, I don’t want to send them any hate despite my bit of annoyance and confusion on how things escalated so quickly.

I will say however, this person’s account is an interactive account for their OC & they had recently collabed with another artist I follow, that’s how this all started.

She feels super confused about the whole interaction.

I didn’t mean it in malice, I just really liked their art style so I liked my favorite posts without any thought and got off.

This artist then proceeded to DM me in anger (which I didn’t see right away because I’ve been busy with my 8-week-old puppy) then followed me and, this is what really upset me:

Commented on a memorial post I made in honor of my elderly dog who passed away last year, complaining how I spam liked and threatening to block me and etc.

Yikes. Still, she tried and was nice.

I tried calmly replying to them as soon as I noticed the comment and apologized, stating I did it in good faith because I liked their art style.

But they met me with nothing but hostility, saying I “rubbed them the wrong way” and “9 out of 10 people don’t like it when you spam like their post”.

I ended up blocking them instead after hopefully smoothing over the situation, I didn’t want to argue but the artist kept making it sound like I just committed the worse crime imaginable while I remained calm the entire time.

Now she’s wondering if she did do something wrong.

It’s the next day and I’m more annoyed about them commenting hostility under the memorial post I made for my dead dog than anything, that post is meant to honor my late dog, not for negativity; I have other posts.

I completely understand if I’m in the wrong but also I feel like I did something so harmless that didn’t warrant such intense hostility towards me?

I’m an artist myself, I understand spam liking but I take it as “yay, someone liked my art!”, not as anything malicious or someone purposefully trying to annoy me.

AITA?

Yikes. This is one of the craziest things I’ve heard. What did Reddit think?

A reader shares their thoughts.

Super weird.

I agree.

I’d feel honored as well.

This right here.

Nowadays, I’d risk saying most people glance through posts so that they can go to the next one, so someone taking the time to enjoy your art should be welcomed.

Even if I found an avalanche of likes a bit overwhelming, that is not a problem. It’s something to be happy or at least grateful about.

Imagine how privileged you’d have to be for LIKES to ruin your day, to the point of messaging a fan of your work like this?

There’s a huge difference between finding something a bit annoying and confronting them about it like they committed a crime, especially by bringing the complaint into a memorial post.

It’s inexcusable behavior, just plain rude and antisocial.
