Some people really do take their bad mood out on whoever happens to be standing in front of them.
One cashier found himself on the receiving end of that when a regular customer suddenly decided to insult his job.
What started as a normal checkout quickly turned into a rant about how retail wasn’t “real work” and how the employee was lazy.
The cashier let him say his piece, but then the man cracked open a beer and drove away.
It was the perfect opportunity to get revenge.
Read on to see how it all played out.
Don’t belittle my job as a cashier because you’re a bitter person.
I’ve had many jobs in the past, from construction work and menial labor to being a bouncer and enlisting in the military.
But nowhere have I had more issues with people pretending like my job is some cushy, laid-back paradise of employment other than retail.
“Don’t work too hard now,” is said to me almost daily by most people, and they don’t mean anything by it for the most part. But I have some customers who say it with the utmost disdain and a smug, snide sense of self-righteousness that whatever I do in my job is nothing compared to whatever that person does… because I can sit at work.
Just as he does every other customer, he told the guy to have a great day.
Enter my customer, who I will use as an example. We will call him L.
L is that usual customer who never seems to be happy, always scowling, never speaks unless absolutely necessary, and when he does, it’s like you forced him to at gunpoint and he doesn’t like it.
L walks in as usual, gets his daily purchase of peppermint schnapps and Clamato beer, no big deal. I tell him like I tell everyone else, “Have a nice day!”
He says nothing and begins to walk off, so I take a seat.
Apparently, he didn’t like the comment.
He stops and looks at me like I said, “I hate your mom!”
His facial expression is that of hate, angst, and constipation.
He puts his bag down and starts off on a tirade about how his life is horrible and he doesn’t like when people have to tell him to, “Have a nice day,” like he’s a child that needs to be told so he doesn’t forget.
He went on to say that my job is weak and I can’t do a “real man’s job” like him framing houses, where if you sit, you get fired.
He let the customer vent.
This goes on for over a minute, and I’m just sitting there, stone-faced, letting him vent whatever nonsense he has on his chest.
I’ve had plenty of customers like this who, when they are angry or upset or just hateful, will just dump on whatever cashier is unfortunate enough to serve them.
I have rhino hide for skin when it comes to this kind of stuff, so I let it go.
Just when he thought the guy was done, he had one final thing to say.
Once he’s finished his little tantrum, he says to me, “Don’t try to work too hard! Lazy jerk!” cracks open his beer and starts drinking it as he leaves. Yes, he is driving.
Well, I know this guy’s plate number, and I have him on camera drinking and driving. So I call the local PD about this loving pillar of society. So now his plate is red-flagged for suspicion of DUI.
Don’t belittle me because you’re a jerk.
Here’s how it worked out with the police.
Fast forward a week, one of his coworkers comes in, who is an acquaintance of mine, telling me he was pulled over and caught drinking and driving.
He literally had a half-full pint on the side of the seat, and blew a 0.09 and decided it was a good idea to resist arrest as well, an all-around upstanding guy.
Yikes! Wonder what makes a person so miserable.
Let’s take a look at what thoughts the readers over at Reddit have about it.
This person will think twice before saying that again.
That’s pretty nasty.
That guy would’ve hated this response.

The first part is true.
That guy had a lot to say for someone making such terrible choices of his own.
There’s nothing wrong with working as a cashier, and he had no reason to talk down to someone just because he was miserable.
The fact that he got busted drinking and driving is icing on the cake.
Maybe he should’ve spent a little less time judging someone else’s job and a little more time worrying about himself.
