Working hard at your job is great, but it doesn’t always pay off the way that you hope that it will.

What would you do if you had been the hardest worker at your job for years, but you only ever got small raises and very little credit for what you do?

That is what happened to the guy in this story, so he finally lost his temper and yelled at his boss, which resulted in him getting written up. He thinks it is unfair that one mistake in 3+ years gets him written up, despite his constant hard work.

While I can certainly see why this would be frustrating, it is important to learn to control your temper. Read on to see what the people in the comments think about this situation.

1st Write up in 20+ years

So, I have learned a valuable lesson today. I knew this, but thought differently and was proven wrong.

So, I work in a corporate ran IT department. Our job usually consists of nothing but camera, dvr, and security device set ups for different locations.

I do not have a work background of IT or any corporate type job. I have worked mostly in a handfull of plants. A little bit of warehouse work but mostly in a hot environment extruding plastics into turf.

He doesn’t want to get back into management.

I always ended up in some form of leadership positions at these places. Has never took me over a year to move up in these type of job environments. Roughneck environment where tensions fly and arguments happen, but people move on.

Been doing my current job a little over 3 and a half years. No promotion has been presented to me, not that it matters. I got out of leadership for a reason and have no desire to go back any time soon.

Clearly, he is a hard worker.

It was a very busy environment in the beginning where my history of being the guy that gets stuff done stood out and got stuff done.

Old habits are hard to kill you know.

I’m the only one in this office that can take a 2 hour job and turn it into 45 mins – 1 hr tops. I have also been the only one to actually break a sweat, get up out of my chair and find things in our warehouse to do just to pass time and “help out”.

Never gotten any rewards, or recognition for my extra efforts, not really expected any.

Sometimes you have to just ignore your manager to get things done.

This place does the corpo standard of annual reviews and penny raises. The usual stuff that I am sure most corporate workers have to deal with.

My manager is a real corporate ‘yes man’.

He knows nothing of the job that I or any of my co-workers do. He just delegates and we, mostly, ignore and do it a better way.

My production based background has carried over into this job where I have the habit of figuring out ways to make my job quicker.

Slow times at work can be nice.

I have tried to show others, but they stick to the slow ways that they were taught. This is all fine and all, but this is where the write up will come in.

Last week we were short handed 2 people. We have been slow as far as work goes for a few months. So, other than my manager running around looking for ways to kiss up, it has been a chill time for the guys doing what work did come through.

Now they are busy.

I, on the other hand was coming in early, staying late, getting the place cleaned up and presentable for a few high brow customers that came through for a tour a couple days last week.

Only I was staying late and coming in early helping the warehouse get ready. No one else.

Well, I finally snapped on my manager Thursday.

We were short handed and swamped with the most work we have had in months. He was running around not lifting a finger to help, but trying to tell us we were gonna have to stay and finish.

You can’t yell at your boss and expect to get away with it.

Even if we weren’t gonna leave till 8:00pm. I was here at 5:00am while everyone else gets here at 7:00 – 7:30.am.

He asked me a question and I did give him a short answer but I was annoyed tired and ready to go.

He kept on with his questioning, trying to throw his weight around, when I finally just snapped. Told him about himself. How he knows nothing of what we do and should not be delegating anything that he does not understand.

He is taking his slap on the wrist in stride.

How everyone else will not pick up the pace when we get swamped. How I am the only one to actually sweat, volunteer to do extra, and to get stuff done. I mean, nothing like what he would’ve got if he was over me at one of those other plants I used to work in.

Anyways, today I finally got written up.

Not complaining, I deserved it. I was completely wrong for my behavior, and none of my co-workers deserves anything that I had said.

I apologized to them and we are fine and still working together like always.

Apparently, he didn’t learn his lesson.

So, during hist dialogue of how right he is and how wrong I was I went off again.

How the heck can someone that works so hard not get anything out of the years but finally snap and gets a write up?

I also said that I will not be doing anything else outside of my job title. If no work for my job is in for that day he is more than welcome to send me home.

This guy has a very high opinion of himself.

I have learned a lesson to remember for the short time I have left here.

I have good standing at my old job, back at the other plants, so I will probably be speaking to my old plant manager soon about me coming back as a operator or just a floater since I am well experienced in plastic extrusions.

Just insane how you can work hard and be one of the best a place has ever had, in terms of work, and get nothing, but as soon as something goes wrong you get in trouble.

I can see why he would be frustrated, but he deserved to get in trouble for what he did. And if he was unhappy with his reviews and raises, he should have dealt with that more professionally.

This is a fact.

If this commenter had done as he was told, it wouldn’t have been a problem.

Don’t upset your bosses, it is really that simple.

Companies don’t care about the employees.

If he isn’t being rewarded for his hard work, he should be looking for a different job. No matter how hard someone works, that doesn’t mean they can just yell at their managers.

Learning to control your emotions and do what the company wants is very important. Then, if you don’t like your compensation, you can find new work with a clear conscience.
