AITA for taking my daughter to see her visiting cousins for 4 consecutive visits on my custody schedule?
I have my daughter on an every-other-weekend schedule.
Recently, my family from Australia came over to stay at my parents’ house for a few months.
This was a rare visit from family living on the other side of the world.
So I took my daughter to my parents’ house for 4 of my custodial visits in a row.
4 back-to-back custody weekends spread over about two months so she could bond with her cousins.
This man’s partner got upset with him for allowing his daughter to spend time with her cousins.
One of those weekends happened to be my daughter’s birthday.
She specifically asked to spend it at my parents’ house with her cousins.
My partner, who I live with, is extremely upset about this.
She feels like our home routine was completely disrupted for two months.
She also feels like my daughter rejected our home by choosing to celebrate her birthday at my parents’ house instead of with us.
She forbade him from bringing his daughter to their home again on weekends.
As a result, my partner is now telling me that I am no longer allowed to bring my daughter to our home on my weekends.
This is especially critical right now because my next contact with my daughter will be a full week long.
It will be her first entire week staying with me.
We have another full week scheduled together at the end of August.
Now, he’s wondering if what he did was wrong.
I thought I was doing the right thing as a dad by facilitating a rare, once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity for my daughter to build memories with family from overseas.
But my partner’s severe reaction is making me feel like I did something awful.
AITA for taking my daughter to see her cousins for 4 consecutive visits?
It seems understandable that OP wanted his daughter to make the most of such a rare family visit.
Plus, it was his daughter’s request to celebrate her birthday with her cousins.
His partner may have felt overlooked, but banning his daughter from their home seems like an overreaction.
I don’t think it’s fair to make huge decisions like this when you are not part of the custody agreement.
