Many people have strong objections to the use of AI, and they can’t stand it when other people use it, either.

What would you do if you were in an association that had agreed not to use AI, but then you found out that the president used it for editing an image used for the group?

That is what happened to the guy in this story, so he called the president out for what she did, which resulted in her stepping down. Now they will have trouble getting someone to take over her role, so he wonders if he handled it poorly.

Personally, I think that getting upset about the use of AI as a tool is weird, and it seems like the president got sick of this type of drama. Read through the full story below and see what you think.

AITA for calling out my association’s president for her AI use ?

I (23M) am part of an association as head of a committee.

Wow, these people really hate AI.

In the past, our president (55ish F), who’s also the head of the communication committee, used AI to make posters and social media posts. Multiple members weren’t ok with that, so in the last board meeting we agreed that we wouldn’t use AI anymore.

We’ve made it a point to tell her that if she’s even slightly overwhelmed with her workload, to never hesitate to ask for help, especially if the other option is to use AI. There’s four to five people ready to help, some are even graphic designers.

This seems like a great use of AI technology.

More context : my committee organizes monthly support groups. We like to take an anonymous picture at each meeting (without people’s faces), it’s for internal use only and won’t be posted anywhere else than a private discord channel only accessible by committee and board members, as a kind of archive.

The issue :

Back in September, the picture had my hands clasped together in the foreground. Two days later she used an AI rendering of the picture (just my hands) to advertise for the group. I didn’t say anything then.

What is their objection to the use of AI?

Fast forward to this week.

She used another AI version of the picture to advertise for our next support group.

So I called her out, in private and in the board’s discord channel as it wasn’t a personal matter but it impacted the whole association IMO.

She is using the tools available to do her job.

The jist of it was that it was disrespectful to the board because she disregarded the decision to not use AI, and to our support group’s members for having used a private picture without asking.

Her response: in private, she told me it had nothing to do with AI, “sorry to know how to do my job”, and that she wouldn’t read further.

Well, she’s off the board now anyway, and I can’t blame her for leaving.

In the board’s chan, she denied using AI, told me “when you don’t know, you keep quiet”, accused me of complaining because of my own ego, that her methods were never challenged before and then she resigned.

She didn’t say if she resigned from her position as the head of coms or being president. To be clear : I mentioned it was my hands because I recognized the picture. I would have had the same reaction if it were someone else.

If you don’t want someone to leave, don’t harass them about little things.

Here is why I think I might be in the wrong:

Without a president, our association can’t work. We had a hard time finding someone to fill the treasurer’s chair already, and I’m afraid we’ll have even more trouble finding someone to fill hers.

There is definitely a reason why it is hard to get people to join this association.

I realize now that I put the whole association in jeopardy, but at the same time, the board was clear about AI use.

Maybe I should have just confronted her in private, but it happened multiple times with other people and she always comes in public when someone has something to say to her, and I wanted my version out before she could twist my words/play victim.

AITA?

If this guy wants to control how everyone on the committee does their tasks, he should step up and be president. Complaining about editing a picture with AI is weird.

Maybe she stepped down because she was sick of the drama in these meetings. If they don’t want her to use AI on this, her work would take dramatically longer than needed, which she likely doesn’t want.

I wouldn’t want to be involved with a group like this either. Let someone else do the work if they want it done.
