Teenagers have a special talent for remembering every trend, game and social media post- but somehow never Mother’s Day. But forgetting the one person who has been there for you through every young adult slip up may cause more damage than you realize.

How would you handle your teen disrespecting you on the one day they’re supposed to show you bare minimum kindness? One situation recently had Reddit up in arms about this discourse. Here’s what happened.

AITA for not wishing my mom on Mother’s Day and for joking around when she came to my room?

I’m terrible with dates.

Like, I forgot my own birthday last year.

So when Mother’s Day came around, I had no idea it was that day.

Unfortunately forgetting that comes with consequences.

According to my mom, I didn’t even give her a kiss, but that’s not true — I was actually playing around with her that day, I just didn’t know the date.

Yesterday she came home already in a bad mood, clearly still stewing over the whole Mother’s Day thing.

Well, can you blame her?

She came to my room to ask for a kiss.

I was in the middle of a game, so I paused it, put down the controller and my headphones, and when she came close I did this joke I’ve been doing for years — I fake like I’m going to hit her, pull my arm back and stick my tongue out.

I’ve done it a hundred times.

And didn’t read the room the same amount of times.

She turned around, walked out, and started ignoring everything I said.

She then went to my grandmother’s room and started crying, saying I was ungrateful, that I’m a bad son, that she’s “not one of my school friends” for me to joke around with her.

This morning my grandmother told me that my mom said she was going to “starve herself” because I’m a “bad son.”

Maybe a little dramatic, but she sounds at her wit’s end.

There’s also some background stuff she keeps bringing up: my parents are divorced (she was the one who asked for it).

My dad recently got a tattoo and I mentioned it the same way I’d mention anyone getting a tattoo — she says I talked about it with “so much pride.”

She also claims I remember Father’s Day and my dad’s birthday but not hers — except a classmate reminded me about Father’s Day and she herself told me about his birthday.

There’s a lot going on under the surface here with Mom…

I’ve been trying to talk to her properly but she keeps doing this — the silent treatment, crying to my grandmother, the dramatic statements — instead of just having a conversation.

I’m not going to apologize just to make the drama stop without anything actually being resolved.

So, AITA?

Oh, the trials and tribulations of being an ignorant teenager. Let’s see if the Reddit comments were able to properly school him.

The comments put this kid in his place pretty quickly.

And offered him some pretty obvious advice.

One person put the situation into perspective.

And pointed out the big picture failing.

But one person ended up showing some grace.

He’s not going to be able to joke his way out of this one…
