Now, this is the kind of boss we should all work for when we’re young!
Because if they’re not gonna stick up for you when the going gets tough, then who will?
Check out what this business owner had to say about how he took it upon himself to tell a rude customer to back off and leave his young employees alone.
Let’s goooooooo!
AITA for telling this customer he had to stop hovering over us / making comments about portion sizes?
“I’m a retail business owner.
We sell a food product stored in a refrigerated display case that the staff serves.
Price goes by weight and it’s pretty precisely / accurately served. Staff is trained and monitored giving out proper portions. It costs us a lot of money wholesale.
The guy had been a sort of regular customer for years. He’s in his late fifties or early sixties.
He sounds like a bit of a busybody…
He’s always watching me or the staff serving this product.
It’s always been a joke among me and the staff how odd it is. He does it every time. He’s also an odd looking small man. Other customers don’t do this.
A couple years ago he made a comment I didn’t give him enough and I weighed it. It was right on the proper weight and he said he was joking.
I think previous to this he announced, in front of me and coworkers, that “regular customers should get bigger portions.” I looked at him funny and said nothing. I don’t think he was expecting that.
He’s pretty impressed with himself!
I always got the feeling from his behavior he fancies himself a really smart, special guy. Or at least he’s way better than food service workers.
He never bothered me again and when he comes in he tries to avoid me and get other staff to wait on him. He even told me one or two times he was going to let someone else help him.
I’m an adult male in my late thirties. I’m bigger and taller than him. He seems to be almost “afraid” of me. He’s very polite to me and when I wait on him I can see him covertly watching me serve it.
It’s almost like he wants to say something to me but feels he cannot. I don’t short change him or give him less. I’m quite but polite to him.
The rest of my staff is under 24. Most are 16 to 20.
Actually, this guy sounds like a bit of a bully…
I notice when he thinks I’m out of earshot or not paying attention to him and staff are waiting on him he’s way more overt watching them serve the product.
He’s moving his head around to get a better angle to see how much he’s getting. He makes weird faces almost to show his displeasure.
It’s so freaking odd.
He also will say stuff like “oh it’s not enough” or “regular customers should get extra.” He talks to them like he’s their parent or grandfather.
He does tip sometimes but never me. I think he also makes comments he tips more for bigger portions. Or he’ll tip if he thinks someone gave him more.
Staff say it’s pretty uncomfortable. I understand that. I was a teenager working in retail. I dealt with pushy and nearly aggressive customers. He’s three times their age.
My manager who is in his mid twenties but way bigger than me and weight lifter says he notices the guy doesn’t bother him but he will say stuff to the scared teenager staff.
I don’t like how he’s very respectful to me but not so much to my staff. He’s not directly rude but his behavior is unlike any of my other customers. It’s almost like it’s a game or a contest to him.
Here we go again…
So a few days ago I watched him hovering over a staff member, making faces, and he made a comment about the portion wasn’t enough. He had an angry look on his face. I felt like he was really talking down to them.
I don’t know why he thinks he deserves bigger portions. It’s a busy shop so I don’t know how he thinks staff should be trained or know he’s a “regular” and he should get more.
I’ve run into customers who think they should get special treatment and I’ve told them I don’t know what they want me to do have their picture on the wall and have something written below saying what special stuff they’re entitled to.
Boom!
I guess he didn’t see me and I came over and said to him plainly “don’t make comments to my staff about portions they are training to dispense the proper amount.”
He made some comment about “the boss” and I told him I’m the boss.
He paid and stormed out.”
