I’ve said it before and I’m gonna say it again…
It really drives me nuts when people WITHOUT CARS try to save parking spaces for their friends.
It doesn’t work that way, folks!
And, on top of that, if you try to do this, it usually ends up in some kind of argument…or worse.
In today’s story, a man explained what happened when he held a parking spot for a friend of his.
Take a look at what happened.
AITA for Saving a Parking Spot?
“Parking is notoriously bad in my neighborhood.
As a result, whenever I know ahead of time that guests are driving, I take a 15-20 minute bike ride to look for parking spots so that they will have a spot to park as soon as they arrive (otherwise, they spend half an hour or so just driving around looking for parking, at least if I don’t find one within the 20 minutes, we can both search together).
He has it all worked out…
To be clear: I won’t take any spots that other cars are waiting for, and will usually find a spot with a person about to leave (one driver even offering to wait for the other car to arrive before leaving).
I was holding a spot the other day when a car came a few minutes later and honked at me and started driving towards me. I told him my friend would be arriving in a few minutes.
Interaction:
Me: Sorry, this spot is taken. My friend is around the corner and will be here in a minute.
Driver: Get out of here. I need to park.
Me: I’m holding it for a friend. He’ll be here in a moment. (jumped on phone to contact my friend to see his whereabouts).
Classy!
Driver: Cursing and inappropriate comments. Then just honking and streams of “Screw you.”
He kept driving towards me the whole time and I left the spot after he bumped my bike wheel.
My friend’s car arrived ~2 minutes into the interaction, and the angry man cursed at both of us and get saying “Screw you” over and over.
Fortunately, a spot opened up a few cars down and the rest of the day was golden.
People usually have strong opinions about this…
It seems the general internet is split on the idea of “saving spots” but I’m undertaking a time-consuming effort to look for a parking spot before my guest arrives AND I’m not “stealing” anyone’s spot as I don’t take any spots that cars are waiting for.
Otherwise, my guest would spend a half hour – hour (after driving for the same amount) searching for parking every time they visit. I consider it more as me taking on a duty to save us both time.
