Would you be upset if a family member got married without telling you?

That’s a good question, right?

Okay, let’s up the ante: would you be upset if that person was YOUR FATHER.

Yeah…that’s kind of a tough pill to swallow…

But that’s what this woman is going through and she’s not sure to handle how she’s feeling about this whole thing.

Let’s take a look at what she had to say about this situation.

AITA for being mad at my dad for having his wedding without me?

“I (25F) and my sister (22F) woke up to a text from our dad (52M) a couple days ago of his wedding photos with his now wife (we’ll call her Betty), two best friends, and officiate.

Say whaaaaaat?!?!

This was completely out of the blue for us as he told us he was planning on getting married out of the state in Florida in October.

We weren’t invited to that either with his excuse being that we wouldn’t be able to afford the trip. In his defense, my sister (we’ll call her Jane) just graduated college and got a job working with me for average pay and I have been the solo income for me and my fiancé for a while so money has been tight to say the least.

This is pretty upsetting.

We were hurt that he made that decision for us, but at least his reasoning was sound.

Back to a couple days ago. He gets married in our home state over the weekend without us and tells us by texting us photos of the wedding. We are incredibly hurt to say the least. Our relationship with our dad isn’t bad by any means.

Jane not so much but I was always closest to my dad than my mom (who I’m no contact with currently).

This Father’s Day, Jane and I even got matching tattoos in our dad’s handwriting saying “I love you, Dad” so I can promise it’s not a “we’re not really close” kind of situation.

We responded to the texts cordially, with Jane saying how beautiful Betty looked and I responded with “Awwwww” and left it at that. We had talked to him before about wanting to be involved in his wedding and he’d say he wanted it to be small.

This is a pretty weird situation…

I feel like a jerk for being so torn up about it but everyone I’ve talked to has said he was the jerk. I’m struggling to come to terms with my emotions on this and would love some outside perspectives.

As I’m thinking on this, no, I don’t think Betty did this intentionally as her own kids (around our age) weren’t there either and Betty and I are pretty close.

They’ve been together almost 10 years now and finally got married after my parents divorce was finalized this year (Dad was kind enough to keep my mom on his health insurance since she had cancer a decade ago and those check-ups are really expensive).

I want to respect their choice but I’m also really hurt that they didn’t want me around for such a big moment.

AITA?”

Well, you feel how you feel…

And you can’t change that!

But she shouldn’t let this bother her any longer.

It’s time for her to accept her dad got married without telling her and to move on…
