Sometimes, it’s hard to know when someone needs your support and when they’re asking too much of you.

One man is dealing with that after his girlfriend learned her internship won’t be turning into a full-time job.

She’s devastated and worried about starting over, so she asked him to cancel a dinner he had already planned with coworkers.

The problem is that he works remotely and sees the dinner as a rare chance to connect with people from work.

Now, she says his decision not to cancel proves he isn’t there for her when things get hard.

Read on to see what you think he should do.

AITA For Not Cancelling Dinner With Coworkers

My girlfriend (23F) just got some bad news yesterday that her internship is not leading to a job.

This is pretty devastating to her because, after next week, she won’t be employed anymore and has to start at square one again.

We met yesterday, and she was sobbing, thinking that she was a loser and that I would leave her because she’s not successful.

Now, his girlfriend is really trying to guilt-trip him.

Alternatively, I (26M) work remotely. A few people in the nearby area all wanted to meet up and get to know each other, so this has been the plan for a week to meet tonight.

This morning, my girlfriend called and told me I should cancel the dinner, and the fact that I didn’t shows that I’m not there for her on her worst week and I only want to be there for her when it’s convenient.

I still feel like canceling would really hurt my reputation with my coworkers, but she then got upset and said that she should be more important than them.

AITA?

Yikes! What a stressful situation he’s stuck in.

Let’s see if the readers over at Reddit have any advice for him.

According to this reader, he can use it as an excuse to leave dinner early.

That would be a good use of time.

Here’s someone who thinks the GF is selfish.

Yet another person who thinks the GF is wrong.

She’s having a really hard week, so it makes sense that she wants him around.

But he already had plans, and spending one evening with coworkers doesn’t mean he suddenly cares less about her.

If anything, this sounds like a moment where she needs reassurance more than proof that he’ll drop everything.

Hopefully, once the shock wears off, she can see that he’s capable of supporting her and keeping his commitments.
