Working hard to afford small luxuries only to watch them disappear overnight is exactly the kind of thing that would test anyone’s patience.
One college student, budgeting carefully on a student income, had specifically set aside guest-friendly products for his visiting younger sister, only to return from a trip and discover his own expensive shampoo and conditioner had been used at an alarming rate instead.
Given her significantly longer hair, the math behind the sudden depletion wasn’t exactly a mystery.
He responded by simply relocating his products to his own room, a boundary that should’ve been the end of it. Instead, his sister accused him of being stingy, and his grandparents piled on, calling him selfish for protecting his own belongings.

AITA For not letting my sister use shampoo
I (19m) am being visited by my sister (16f) at our grandparents’ house. I live with my grandparents, and she lives with our parents.
She is visiting, and the first few days I was on vacation with my friend.
Here’s where the trouble came in.
And I come back and noticed a lot of my expensive shampoo/conditioner and hair treatments have been used drastically.
For reference, I have short hair and she has hair down to her knees.
He had been very clear with his sister about this before.
I had explicitly told her there was guest soap in the main bathroom for her to use (if anyone is wondering it is the Being brand, so it’s not even cheap dollar store stuff). I work hard for my stuff so I can use good healthy products.
He soon decided his sister couldn’t be trusted with the honor system.
After finding out, I hid my shampoo and hair products in my room, and now she is being gross and nasty with me by telling me that I am being stingy with MY soap and treatments.
For reference, I am a college student who has a job, and I buy the large bottles of hair soap.
He can’t afford to continue to replace products he didn’t even get the chance to fully use.
I cannot afford to constantly replace high end product when I had intentions of only buying it for ONE person. It was full when I left, and now it is HALF empty. These are LARGE bottles.
My grandparents are calling me selfish and saying she is a guest and can use what she wants. Am I the AH?
This is shampoo theft!
What did Reddit have to say?
This commenter has dealt with a situation just like the one in this story.
This story is a cautionary tale about not leaving out expensive products for guests to have their way with.
Maybe his sister is just in a different stage of maturity than he is.

It’s not personal — it’s about finances.
He literally set out guest soap specifically so this wouldn’t happen, and it still happened.
That’s not a “misunderstanding,” that’s someone deciding the nice stuff looked better than the stuff meant for them.
After his sibling showed him exactly the level she was willing to stoop to, locking his products up is just common sense.
At the end of the day, he’s a broke college student trying to protect the one nice thing he treats himself to, not some hoarder guarding gold.
And to his entitled family: buy your own shampoo or use the stuff that was provided for you.
