Some people like to pretend that ageism doesn’t exist in the workforce, but, unfortunately, its’ alive and well.
It can be frustrating to try to find a job at any age, but as a person gets older, the pressure ramps up and a lot of hiring managers aren’t interested in putting time and effort into someone with experience who might expect more from a job.
The person who wrote this story knows all about it, and they shared their frustrations in an honest way that a lot of folks out there will relate to.
Let’s take a look at what they had to say.
Ageism at Best Buy…
“Best Buy is opening a new store in NYC.
As I lost my software job due to the big AI excuse, I decided to give it a try since before becoming a developer I was a computer tech and thought it would be a perfect fit for their Geek Squad advanced repair agent job.
It’s tough out there these days…
First of all they didn’t even bother to read the resume, their talent acquisition lady asked me if I had experience even though the first thing listed on my resume was a short description of my computer repair experience and a list of all IT certifications I have.
Then they played the game of sending 5-6 emails just to set up an interview. When I finally went to the store, it turned out to be a group interview. There were 5 other guys all in their 20s, me in my mid 30s and 3 Best Buy managers .
Most of the young guys didn’t even bring their resume, had shaky answers and didn’t even ask any relevant questions.
Ugh…this sucks…
At the end of the day we all were sent home and 2 days later I got the dreaded “after careful consideration…” email.
I sincerely thanked them for the chance and asked them for feedback since maybe I did something wrong unconsciously and of course it was crickets afterwards.
After replaying the whole interview process a thousand times in my head the only logical conclusion I can come to is that they probably don’t want someone older even if they have the know-how and rather deal with kids they can exploit and yell at.
Man this job market sucks.”

Things are tough out there right now, no doubt about it.
But all you can do is keep moving forward, do your best, and hope for a little bit of luck along the way.
Poor guy…hopefully he’ll land on his feet soon.
