It can be hard looking for a place to live with roommates because you all have to agree about what you’re looking for in an apartment, how big you want it to be, what part of town, the parking situation, etc. There are a lot of factors to consider, and some will probably be more important to one person than another.

In this story, one man is looking for an apartment to share with his friend and his friend’s girlfriend. He thought they had all agreed that they didn’t want to live next to a construction site, but then his friend signed a lease on an apartment next to a construction site. He’s pretty upset about it.

AITA For Not Saying I Dislike Living Next to Construction Sites?

Buddy and his girlfriend and I were looking for a condo. Due to my not yet having approval for a letter of employment, he had to take responsibility of handling all viewings with his partner.

I had an ideal location in the city.

We found a spacious apartment there that fit most of our requirements, but we were told by his realtor that we shouldn’t bother with the showing due to complaints from other viewers of a construction site directly across the street.

We both were in agreement that a construction site would suck, and decided to not opt for it.

So they found another place to live.

Later, in the final minutes of the fourth quarter (I was living with my parents at the time, and he was close to end of lease from previous apt), he’d find a unit that in a less-ideal location but equally spacious, and we quickly took it as an alternative.

Upon moving in, I found that we were living directly across from a construction site.

When I challenged him on this, he told me he didn’t see the crane due to it being dark at night and him being stressed due to his eviction date closing in (His partner was on his butt, and would’ve preferred them moving into a single bedroom rather than deal with my preferences, on top of his lease almost being up.)

The realtor additionally didn’t tell him that there was a construction site across this one, and he surmised that it was because other viewers didn’t complain about it to the realtor. He also says that had the realtor not indicated the construction here was a huge problem, he might’ve not told me.

They talked it out.

We had a discussion and while he can assume responsibility for missing the construction site when he was checking out the unit, he maintains that even if he was aware, he wouldn’t have necessarily told me due to me not having explicitly specified that I was uncomfortable living next to a construction site.

He also reaffirms that in the absence of the earlier unit implying I wasn’t comfortable with construction sites, in a hypothetical where he was doing showings again without the earlier unit implying that I didn’t like construction sites, he doesn’t feel like it would’ve been reasonable for me to assume that he should know that most people don’t like living next to construction sites.

He also said that his framing is that he ultimately wouldn’t mind a construction site, if the unit was good enough, which ours is, and the other wasn’t, and that he’d have to assume my different preferences to make the call to ask me if a construction site was ok, which in his opinion is an unfair ask. That without me explicitely stating it, he would’ve omitted it.

OP doesn’t want to live next to a construction site, but his friend doesn’t seem to mind. The only real solution at this point would be to find separate apartments.

Here’s a suggestion to talk to the realtor together.

I like the last suggestion of going to the realtor together to bring up the construction site and see if they could get out of the lease due to the lack of disclosure about the construction project. But if the friend wants to move in despite the construction site, OP might have to deal with it or find somewhere else to live.

It’s hard to complain about an apartment when you weren’t there to look at it.
