Some hotel guests have no manners or even just a slight sense of decency.
This hotel assistant manager rants about an elderly hotel guest who thinks he’s at his house. He’s been yelling around his room and treating the staff disrespectfully. After a few days, when the guest yelled again, the assistant manager finally told him off and gave him a warning that the next time he yells, he’ll be out on the street.
Must be really frustrating to have to deal with people like this one and still have to maintain a calm demeanor. Read the full story below for all the details.
Frustrated rant.
Had an elderly guy (about 65+) check in just shy of two weeks ago. He was dropped off by the sheriff because he got evicted from where he was staying.
That’s all fine and all, but during the first week, he was yelling around in his room because he lost his debit card. (A church paid for his first two days, then he started paying daily.)
The manager and I (assistant manager/maintenance) went down to his room to tell him to lower the volume.
A few days later, he was yelling in his room that he needed a house, and we could hear him all the way down in the lobby.
The man kept yelling in the hotel.
So today, I’m working the evening shift, and he comes up and says he’s having trouble with the soda vending machine.
I didn’t catch what he said at first, so I said, “I’m sorry, what did you say?” He YELLS, “I can’t get the pop machine to work.”
I told him, “Stop. You are walking a thin line. This is not your house, this is a hotel. You are not going to talk to me like that. There are guests in this hotel, so show some respect. Another outburst like this will have you looking for somewhere else to stay.”
I told the other employees that if he yells in his room again or is disrespectful to employees or guests, he’s out. No more warnings.
I hate how some people think that just because they’re old, they can get away with whatever they want.
I feel for the older man who’s alone, homeless, and clearly struggling with his mental health. However, there’s no excuse to treat others so disrespectfully, especially those who are only trying to do their jobs. Times are tough, and housing is admittedly becoming unaffordable, but I don’t see why the hotel staff should have to deal with all of this.
Let’s read what other people in the comments section think about this.
This older person has something to say.
Fair point.
Here’s an idea.
A valid question from this one.
If you enjoyed this story, check out this post about an employee who quiet quit, then quit for real, following a no-overtime mandate.
And here’s a useful reminder.
Age is no excuse; rudeness should not be tolerated.
