A single overheard sentence can sometimes unlock years of quiet, unspoken fear, and that’s precisely what’s happening for one teenage girl in this story.
The only child of her dad and his fiancée, a woman she’s loved and trusted for nearly her entire life, she recently overheard them discussing the idea of having or adopting another baby, and immediately found herself overwhelmed with jealousy she didn’t expect and doesn’t fully understand.
Underneath that jealousy sits something more vulnerable, a fear that a future sibling wouldn’t carry the same complicated history she does, being her dad’s child from a relationship that ended before she even knew her biological mother.
Instead of raising these feelings with her parents, she’s distanced herself entirely, staying with her boyfriend’s family for days while trying to decide if speaking up would help or hurt.

WIBTA if I told my parents that I’m jealous of a potential baby sibling
I (15F) am an only child. My birth mom and my dad are split up (no contact) and I never knew my biological mother (they split up when I was little).
Long story short, my dad met her current partner and they’re now engaged. I’ve known my dad’s fiancee almost my entire life and we’re all very close, and I know I’m practically spoiled rotten.
But soon her status as an only child was threatened, and it’s unearthed some uncomfortable feelings.
A few days ago I overheard my parents talking about the possibility and logistics of having or adopting another kid. Since then, I keep having all these awful jealous feelings about it.
I can’t help but think maybe they were talking about the possibility because of this or that reason.
She starts to take this very personally.
If it’s because of some sort of unmet expectation or something else. (I never really got involved with my dad’s cultural practices, I’m not the best student, etc.)
But the thought that haunts me is that my baby sibling wouldn’t have all the baggage that I know is wrapped up with me being my dad’s ex’s kid.
She worries what might happen if another child was introduced to their family.
That because I’m not related to my stepmom that she’ll unconsciously favor her own kid and that the same might be true because they can’t subconsciously remind my dad of her ex and everything that went wrong between them. Maybe all of this is just me looking for reasons to justify being upset at the idea of sharing my parents’ attention as a spoiled only child.
Now she questions if these concerns are worth bringing to light.
WIBTA if I told my stepmom and dad about these jealous feelings? Or if I should just swallow my feelings and hope that it goes away?
These are some complicated feelings and this teen deserves support to help her work through them.
What did Reddit have to say?
This teenager seems impressively self-aware.
A trusted therapist would also be an appropriate forum for these feelings.
Good parents would want to support their child through this.

There’s nothing shameful about feeling scared that a new sibling might somehow fit more easily into a family she’s already worried she doesn’t fully belong to.
That fear comes from real history, not entitlement, and pretending it isn’t there will only let it grow heavier the longer it stays unspoken.
Parents who’ve loved her this consistently for most of her life deserve the chance to reassure her directly, rather than learning secondhand that she felt unable to come to them at all.
Speaking up isn’t complicating the situation, it’s giving her family the opportunity to actually support her through something that clearly matters.
