She Paid for Her Own Netflix Account—Then Her Sibling Hijacked It and Refused to Log Out

Fresh starts are supposed to come with a little more peace, not new versions of the same old frustrations.

One young woman, having recently moved out of a difficult household with her mom, had spent months quietly covering a basic Netflix subscription, only to find herself locked out of watching anything once her younger brother started hogging the single available device.

She approached her mom with a fair, two-option solution, either take over the cost now that the whole household uses it, or have her brother’s dad start covering his own streaming.

Rather than talk it through, her mom kept cutting her off and getting visibly irritated whenever the subject came up.

You’ll want to keep reading for this one.

AITA for refusing to pay for my brother’s Netflix subscription?

So me (18F) and my mom (52F) just moved out, and we are no longer living with my younger brother (12M) and his dad (64M), my mom’s ex.

She sets the scene for the story.

For the last few months I’ve been paying for a Netflix monthly subscription out of my own money.

It is the cheapest one, the one that only allows one device at a time to watch it.

Soon her brother starts freeloading.

Now that we’ve moved out, my brother, who did not treat me very well lately, is still using it, so now, when I sometimes want to watch something I can’t, because he is using it.

She’s getting close to finally putting her foot down, but she starts second-guessing herself.

I tried setting a boundary and told my mom that if she wants, she can either pay for Netflix herself so we will all keep using it, as she’s paying for her and for her children, or she can tell my brother to find someone else to pay for it (aka his dad).

Is this unreasonable? She doesn’t even let me finish and gets irritated whenever I bring it up, so nothing changes.

AITA?

Something needs to change here.

What did Reddit have to say?

Maybe there’s a simple solution here.

Her account, her decision.

This really isn’t her responsibility.

This user also says to just go the password-changing route.

She’s out here paying for the account and still can’t watch anything because her little brother’s hogging the one and only device slot. NOPE.

And it’s not even like she asked for something wild, she gave two totally reasonable options and got unfairly shut down before she could even finish talking.

If her mother can’t sit through a two minute conversation about a $7 subscription without getting irritated, that says a lot more about her than it does about this teen.

It’s time she stops fronting the bill for her brother’s entitlement.
