Participating in multiple groups at school is a major commitment of time and effort, and it is not something that most students can do.

What would you do if you were fully committed to both softball and theater, but some of the other students didn’t put in full effort at the theater, so the teacher kicked everyone out of the play if they were on the softball team?

That is what happened to the hard-working student in this story, and when the theater teacher asked her to come back because there weren’t enough actors, she refused, and the play was nearly ruined.

I don’t blame her for not wanting to go back after she was unjustly kicked out of the play the first time. Read through the full story below and see what you think.

From Junior High

This was the 90s in a small K-8 Catholic school in a small area where the “city” barely qualifies as one.

It is great when you can get along with everyone.

I’ve always been split between groups…get along with the “weirdos” and the “cool” group, in this case, the “theater geeks” and the “jock girls.” In this case, softball. It was 8th grade.

Well, the other “theater geeks” and I had just had an awesome performance in the winter that, come softball season, everyone was still talking about.

There is a lot of work required for both softball and theater.

So, it was, for the time, “cool”… And more of my softball team joined. Problem was, I was the only one who could balance both.

The rest of my team would often skip drama practice to sit and do homework so they could make softball practice, too. But every practice for both, I was there.

It is awful to punish everyone for the actions of just a few.

Eventually, the drama leader decided this was not okay. She released a notice kicking everyone on the softball team out of drama, including me.

Pretense was it was unfair to everyone else to not include me in the decision 🙄.

The teacher really didn’t think this through.

Couple weeks later, she realized she doesn’t have enough students to cast all the roles and begs for people to come back.

A few softball players do and continue the same problems. I refused; told her I was sticking to what she said.

At least the teacher learned from her mistake.

No one knew their lines, the play sucked. When I left the school to graduate, drama was “uncool” again.

She did tell me she shouldn’t have done it. Oh well. Too late.

The drama teacher had a great opportunity to ensure the theater class was popular, but she ruined it instead.

It should have been this simple.

The drama teacher not only ruined the play, but she also caused a lot of drama in the process. It is never right to punish an entire group when only some of the people are causing problems.

She should have made a policy about missing rehearsals. That way, only the students who didn’t show up would get punished.
