It is really nice to let a sibling live with you for a while, but if they are an adult, that doesn’t mean that you need to care for their every need.

What would you do if you and your fiancée wanted to go out for the day, but that meant leaving her sister home alone?

That is what the couple in this story did, and now the sister and her parents are calling them selfish for going out on their own. While they don’t feel like they did anything wrong, his fiancée is now unhappy with the entire day.

Personally, I think his fiancée needs to stop letting her family manipulate her and make her feel bad for doing completely normal things. Read through the full story and see if you agree.

AITA For me and my fiancée focusing on ourselves?

Just for some backstory, we let my fiancee’s sister move in with us for free.

They seem to be very considerate of her sister.

We finally had a day where I was off work, so I wanted to treat my fiancée since I haven’t been able to do that in a while. Even then, we still asked her sister if she wanted to come with us anyway, but she said no. So, we left and told her we’d be gone for a while.

Originally, before we made plans for ourselves, we were going to drive down to visit her family. Since we don’t have a washer and dryer, we had asked if we could use theirs while we were there.

What a weird thing for her family to think.

But that morning, they made it seem like we were only coming down to use their washer and dryer. After that, I decided we weren’t going to drive an hour away, spend around $40 on gas.

Instead, we went to the mall, grabbed something to eat, stopped by some stores and then went to see a movie in theaters. It was honestly shaping up to be a really good day.

Why would they need to center their lives around her adult sister?

But as soon as we got out of the theater, her mom texted her saying we were selfish and that it was ridiculous we left her adult sister at the house.

Mind you, this is the same sister who chose to move in with us. Her mom said she was home alone and didn’t have anyone, making us feel guilty for simply spending one day together.

I don’t understand why her sister couldn’t leave?

Because we felt bad, we even bought her sister some things while we were already out. But when we got home, she was still upset with my fiancée because we’d been gone for so long.

Apparently, she wasn’t able to go see her boyfriend, who lives in the same town as their parents.

They really did nothing wrong.

At that point, my fiancée, who had been genuinely happy for the first time in a while, had her entire day ruined. The past few months have been really difficult for us, and this was honestly the happiest I’d seen her in a long time.

We decided to spend one day focusing on ourselves, and somehow that made us the selfish ones.

She needs to stop trying to please her family.

Now she’s at the point where she doesn’t even know how to make her family happy anymore. It feels like no matter what she does, it’s never enough.

She’s starting to feel like she isn’t allowed to be happy because the moment she is, she’s made to feel selfish simply because everyone else around her isn’t happy.

No way, the family seems way out of line.

Watching someone you love feel like they can never enjoy their own happiness without being made to feel guilty is heartbreaking. I don’t feel like we did anything wrong, but maybe I am too close to the situation.

AITA?

Her family seems overbearing, controlling, and maybe even manipulative. While cutting them out completely should be a last resort, they do need to disregard their guilt trips and focus on themselves.

Let’s see what the people in the comments have to say about this difficult situation.
