Borrowing without asking is risky. But in this story, storing without telling is riskier.
A woman went to an event with a friend and came home without knowing she’d been carrying an extra passenger in her tote bag the whole time.
Turns out, her friend had slipped her sunglasses in without saying a word, and when the glasses turned up missing days later, she came looking for a replacement.
The problem is that nobody told the bag’s owner any of this was happening. She didn’t agree to watch the sunglasses. She didn’t even know they existed in her possession.
Now she’s stuck wondering what to do next.

AITAH for not offering to replace my friends sunglasses after losing them?
Last weekend I went to an event with some friends.
At some point during the day, one of my friends apparently slipped her sunglasses into a tote bag I was carrying.
Her friend did make one key mistake.
However, she never told me she had done this.
I had no idea her sunglasses were in my bag.
So eventually, the issue blew up in everyone’s face.
A few days later she messaged me saying she had forgotten them in my bag.
I checked everywhere and they’re nowhere to be found.
I have no idea what happened to them.
This person knows she doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to keeping track of things.
For context, I’m genuinely terrible at keeping track of belongings.
I lose things all the time, my phone, keys, cards, hats, umbrellas, etc.
Add alcohol and it’s inevitable.
It’s not something she’s proud of, but it’s something she’s learned to live with.
At this same event I lost a couple of my own belongings as well.
I hate it, and it’s something I’ve struggled with my whole life, but it seems my brain just doesn’t want to keep track of things.
My friends know this about me.
Part of her feels like it’s somehow her fault that these sunglasses went missing.
I’m conflicted about whether I should offer to pay for replacements.
On one hand, the sunglasses disappeared while they were apparently in a bag I was carrying.
But another part of her feels like her friend is just SOL.
On the other hand, I never agreed to be responsible for them.
WIBTA if I didn’t offer to replace them?
If her friend didn’t bother to tell her she was entrusting the sunglasses with her, then she shouldn’t be tasked with keeping track of them.
What did Reddit have to say about all this?
Surely her friend could have picked a better place to store her belongings.
How was she supposed to know?
This user cuts the tension with a joke.

Let’s hope her friend learned a valuable lesson in all this.
At some point, you have to wonder what the friend thought was going to happen.
She handed off her belongings to someone without telling them. It was also a person who famously couldn’t even keep track of her own things.
Sure, this woman could help reimburse her friend out of the kindness of her heart, but no reasonable person would say that was her responsibility.
If her friend cared so much about these sunglasses, maybe she should have taken better care of them.
