Folks…prepare to get frustrated.
Of course, this is the kind of frustration that you’ll experience vicariously because it happened to someone else, but you get the idea…
A woman sounded off about her roommate/landlord who doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of respect for boundaries…or anything, really…
Get all the details below, and think about how you’d handle this situation.
“Don’t touch my stuff” is apparently too confusing and vague.
“I (31f) feel like I’m going crazy just for telling my roommate/landlord (55m) not to use my stuff.
Yesterday, one week after I asked him to stop watering my plants (I’m highly invested in my plants as a hobby and he killed one by “helping” with watering), I noticed that he helped himself to one of my planters and he used some of my gardening soil.
It really irritated me because he has tons of plant pots of his own and his own bag of soil.
That wasn’t the only thing that’s getting on her nerves…
Other offenses over the past several months that I feel are inconsiderate/disrespectful of my space, my belongings, and/or my time:
— He has a habit of leaving his work shoes DIRECTLY ON TOP of my white and cream colored shoes in the entry way when there is plenty of space for him to line them up against the wall like the rest of us do.
— He will leave random objects on my dish drying rack with my clean dishes on it.
He has stated that he doesn’t like cross contamination of non-food items touching his dishes, so why he thought I would be fine with him putting random objects (for example, a burnt out lightbulb from the bathroom) on my drying rack escapes me.
This guy sounds pretty gross…
— We share a bathroom and he has a habit of leaving his dirty clothes or used towels hanging on my towel rack when he has his own towel rack.
— He has a habit of leaving his clothes in the washer/dryer for up to 24 hrs at a time.
— The attic is used for storage and it’s about the same size as the house. I have a few cubic feet of designated space up there for my storage bins and 2 suitcases, and there is about 2’ by 3’ of open space in front of my stuff so I can have a place to stand and access my belongings. The entire rest of the attic is filled with all of Boris’ stuff.
I recently went up to the attic for a suitcase and Boris had piled several things on top of my bins and filled the small standing space with random junk so that I couldn’t even access my stuff.
She’s had enough of dealing with this guy.
— Occasionally I sell things on FB marketplace and I always do porch pickup, and I have told him about this. For some reason he will still mess with the stuff I put out there like put it in the trash or remove it from the porch and bring it inside to ask me about it.
So, after I saw that he used my gardening stuff without even asking, I got really fed up and texted him telling him to stop using my stuff, and I expressed that I was becoming really upset by his repeated lack of respect for my belongings.
He sent this long winded response basically saying that he didn’t know which pots were his and that he “didn’t think it would be this upsetting” (so which is it? did you not know the pot was mine or did you know it was mine and thought I wouldn’t be this upset by you using it?).
He then asked me to go through all the pots and clarify which ones are mine and which ones are free to use (none of our gardening stuff is combined, my stuff is all clearly grouped together) and also list the items he has disrespected.
Dude, take a hint!
I said I’m not engaging in a back and forth debate, just don’t touch my stuff moving forward. Clear boundary.
He responded that he’s not trying to engage in a debate but he wants me to clarify “all other areas or items that might be subject to this level of confusion” whatever that means. I never responded and I don’t plan to.
I feel like he is making his utter lack of awareness my problem. It’s not my job to hold a grown man’s hand and walk him through his own house and point out every item and clarify who it belongs to. I shouldn’t have to send him a list of everything I own.
As an adult and a person with roommates, he should have a grasp on what belongs to him and what doesn’t. I have had roommates before and I have never run into an issue of accidentally using my roommates stuff thinking it’s mine so I just don’t buy this excuse.”
