Common areas should be “common” for everyone.

This woman has a roommate who sometimes sleeps in the living room instead of her bedroom. As a result, she has been called out for passing through the room when her roommate was sleeping and blamed for interrupting her sleep. The situation has left her feeling frustrated as she doesn’t know what to do when it’s clearly a shared space.

Roommate sleeping in living room

My roommate in Madrid is sleeping in the living room some nights and closing the door like it’s her bedroom.

She does this because the living room has A/C and her bedroom doesn’t.

There was one time I went to get a snack late at night in the kitchen (which is adjacent to the living room).

She yelled at me that I woke her up, and it was too late.

This woman has been scolded by her roommate for things not totally her fault.

This wouldn’t have been an issue if she was in her own room because her own room is very far from the kitchen.

And there’s also a door to the kitchen, separating it from the (real) bedrooms.

Sometimes, I need to dry clothes on the balcony (which is attached to the living room).

And she gets all annoyed that I’m coming through the living room ruining her sleep.

She’s scolded and bossed me around so confidently in these situations, and it’s surprising how lacking her self-awareness is.

Even though she’s moving out soon, it still annoys her.

I’m moving in a few days because my visa is up and I have to return to the States.

But it still annoys me, and I guarantee that one day, someone with better Spanish and more confidence than me will call her out on her attitude.

People shouldn’t be sleeping in common rooms generally.

And scolding someone for interrupting your common room sleep is beyond ridiculous.

If the living room is a shared space, everyone should still be able to use it at any time of the day. OP didn’t violate any rules by walking through it to get some snacks or dry some clothes on the balcony. Expecting others to avoid common areas entirely doesn’t seem fair.
