Living arrangements can seriously affect mental well-being.

The following story involves a young man who shares a room with his older brother.

However, his brother’s constant mess and foul smell made it unbearable.

Despite trying to ask him to clean up after his mess, they would always end up arguing.

So when his uncle offered him a better living situation, his parents refused to support the idea.

Read the full story below for all the details.

AITA for wanting to move out of my parents’ house and live with my uncle

I am 19 years old. Since I can remember, I have always shared a room with my older brother (22).

I am a very introverted person. I care about things like cleanliness. My brother is the exact opposite.

Without going into too much detail, it is safe to say me and him are not compatible whatsoever.

My parents cannot or will not move us to a bigger home with another room.

This young man became mentally exhausted from their living arrangement.

This has been extremely mentally draining for many reasons.

My room always smells of food and body odor from him.

Our bathroom is always filthy, to the point where I just use a different bathroom instead.

We share a small closet with almost no room for both of our clothes.

He always argued with his older brother over cleanliness.

I ask him to clean up after himself.

It always ends in an argument. He tells me to get off his back.

This has been going on for years. There are a lot of other things that I do not like.

I think you get the gist of it.

His uncle offered that he could stay with him.

My uncle lives 40 minutes away. He has offered to let me stay with him multiple times.

They have a practically empty home with just him and his wife.

I would be able to finish my studies there. I would have my own privacy and be self sufficient.

I would do my own laundry and feed myself.

His parents didn’t like the idea.

My parents, however, are not fond of this idea. They shut me down every time I bring it up.

Would I be wrong to just move out and let them be angry?

This current situation is not mentally good for me. It has not been mentally good for me for many years.

Also, I hope I do not sound spoiled in this post. I know just having a place to sleep is a privilege.

I agree. Anyone living with a filthy and inconsiderate roommate would get fed up sooner or later.

OP has a valid argument. Plus, his uncle is even offering his place, so I don’t think there’s an issue here.

Wanting your own space and a cleaner environment isn’t being spoiled. It’s a basic need for comfort and sanity.

Don’t you agree? Let’s find out what others have to say about this.
