Nothing tests a family’s boundaries quite like someone deciding your comfort is up for debate.

A woman getting ready for her brother’s engagement party relied on pimple patches to feel confident, a habit her future sister-in-law made clear she didn’t approve of.

Then, right before the party, every single patch vanished without explanation.

Turns out, the disappearance wasn’t random, with her sister-in-law soon admitting she threw them into the trash.

What followed turned a joyful weekend into a full-on family divide.

Keep reading for the full story.

AITA for not going to my brother’s engagement party over a pimple patch?

I (20F) have been dealing with acne for a few years.

I know I’m too old to still let this affect me, but there were moments in my life that I cried begging my mom not to go to school, because I didn’t want anyone seeing how ugly I was.

Lately, things started turning around — or so she thought.

For the last few years, I have been taking care of my health and skin care, but I still have lots of marks and a few pimples, but now I use these magical things called pimple patches. I know they are not discreet, but I feel more secure and confident with them, and I have a collection of them, stars, flowers, hearts. They’re really cute.

Soon she started planning a get together with family.

Well, my brother lives in another city but he wanted to celebrate his engagement with the family, so he and my SIL arrived Thursday on my home (meaning my parents home but also where I live), and they were staying with us.

Then started an influx of rude comments about the pimple patches.

But since the first moment my SIL arrived, she started making comments about my patches, about them being childish, and taking too much attention, and that I would be much prettier without them, but I didn’t say anything because this was their special weekend and also because I don’t care about what she thinks.

Things only escalated from there.

On Saturday, when I was getting ready for the party, I went to put my patches on and they were NOWHERE to be found. And it’s not like I had a single one laying around, I had lots of packages (and they are expensive in my country). A few of them I paid fees to export from the US.

This, understandably, sent her into a state.

I started panicking, crying, and asking my family if I knew where any of them were, and no one saw any of it.

But the clock was ticking, and the time for their party was getting close, and my dad finally said he would go out and buy one for me, because I didn’t want to leave without them, because I wanted to feel pretty and confident at their party.

Soon, someone fessed up.

My SIL basically said that she found them offensive, and that she would be mad if we disrespected her wishes.

Long story short, she said she threw them away, in a public trash, because I clearly had an unhealthy relationship with them and she didn’t want the photos of her engagement party to have colorful stars.

She decided she couldn’t stay to celebrate under these conditions.

I didn’t want to disrespect her, but I need my patches, so my brother said I should stay home and I could celebrate with just him later, so that’s what I did.

Well, they went home yesterday and since then my SIL has been blowing up my phone with texts saying I was an AH for choosing to miss my brother’s engagement party because of pimple patches, and that he was too nice to say how much I broke his heart.

Now her parents are starting to take her SIL and brother’s side too.

I went to tell my parents about it, thinking they would say she was out of line, but they agreed I’m the AH for missing this big day for a small thing, and they just didn’t say anything on the day because they didn’t want to cause more drama.

AITA?

This family is seriously dysfunctional.

The verdict is a no-brainer for this one.

Ultimately, this sister-in-law decided her own comfort mattered more than someone else’s years of hard-won confidence.

Throwing away actual medication was a straight-up power move, one she no doubt knew was wrong in the moment.

Disliking the patches is one thing, but behaving like this just crosses a series line.

These patches were never hers to throw away.
