Sometimes grown adult children stay at home and forget that the “home” they take for granted comes at the expense of someone else. What feels like support to them, is often very exhausting for their worn-out parents.
How would you handle an ungrateful fully grown kid? One guy recently aired his not very self-aware grievances on Reddit- to mixed results. Here’s what he said.
WIBTA if I move in full-time with my dad because I feel burned out at my mom’s house?
I (22M) usually go back & forth between my mom’s and my dad’s each week with my brother (14).
Lately, I feel like my life at my mom is worse than compared to my dad’s.
First, my mom has been having me be an errand boy for her ever since I got my license, like picking up / dropping off my siblings or running to get food for the house.
With great power, comes great responsibility.
I got fed up with it & told my Dad about it, and he was on my side.
My mom told me I could leave, but it was obvious that she didn’t want me to.
Second, I feel a bit burned out when it comes to babysitting my siblings.
Maybe he should imagine how his mom feels about babysitting all of them?
I have two other special needs siblings from a guy that’s not in the picture anymore afaik (9F w/ ADHD & 7M w/ autism).
It gets a bit irritating when I’m at my Dad’s and she asks me to babysit my siblings.
In the most recent stint, I told her I’ll do it for $15, and in the Cash App, she put a note saying “babysitting, he charges his mother for babysitting”.
Can you blame him for being irritated?
Third, my mother’s dating life has been rough since her 2nd divorce.
Her newest guy seems okay, but after all the guys she’s been with, I just don’t feel comfortable around him, especially when they’ve gotten into arguments 2x within a month.
She has confronted me & said that she will try to not argue with him in front of us / at all, but I don’t believe her.
That’s definitely something that should be kept behind closed doors.
Finally, she’s constantly on me when it comes to bills & doing chores around the house.
She’s always complaining about how high her rent and utilities are, and saying that we don’t do anything around the house, even though I clean the kitchen and do yard work when she asks.
She’s also been trying to get me to pay for my phone own bill, constantly asking me when I’m gonna pay it.
Oh, she’s at her wits end.
I told my Dad, and he suggested that I just get my own phone & pay for the bill on that, then just give her the phone that she paid for once I’m ready to leave.
She’ll also have some snarky comments from time to time like “you’re a grown man with a job, why do I gotta feed you?”
To be fair, I do pay the internet bill at my dad’s, but I think it’s understandable since I use the internet the most out of anyone in the house.
There’s some pretty clear favoritism happening here.
Now, I’ll admit that sometimes I can be lazy and forget to do things, but I always do them eventually.
I know it’s tough having to take care of 2 special needs children, and working remotely limits her movement.
I know she’s constantly tired from having to work from home, then getting up to work at Amazon for the extra income, so I know she deserves rest.
Does he know that though?
But at the same time, I’m much more productive and relaxed at my Dad’s.
He’s been way more understandable recently.
Classic young adult male perspective.
If I did move, it would be in the summer when my siblings are out.
WIBTA if I move out & live full time with my Dad?
Oh boy. Sounds like this guy’s still got a lot of growing up to do. Let’s see if Reddit offered any words of wisdom.
The comments didn’t hesitate to lambast him.
Others pulled examples from their own lives.
One person put it simply.
If you enjoyed this story, check out this post about a sister who held up her end of a college savings bargain only to be ripped off by her scheming older sibling.
Another tried, and failed, to show nuance.
And others asked the important questions.
He’s gotta move on up or move on out.
