Different cultures in different countries can be quite, well, different.

Imagine moving away from the country where you grew up and later thinking the culture there is pretty crazy compared to where you live now. If your dad, who still lives in the country where you grew up, asked you for money, would you help him out even if you didn’t think it was the best option?

In this story, one man is in this situation. He grew up in India but has lived in the United States for over a decade. He seems to think Indian culture is crazy, so when his dad asked him for money, he followed up with a few other options.

Now, he’s wondering if he was wrong for not giving his dad the money.

Let’s read the whole story to decide.

AITA for refusing to give money for construction of a floor to my father

Some context: I live in the US but was born and raised in India till I was 21.

I moved to the US on my own at 21 and had grad school debt. I’m now 32, 33 in September.

My parents are divorced, my mom is schizophrenic and my dad used to beat my mom, quite brutally at times.

He also paid for my college which is standard in India btw.

His dad has a problem.

Recently he told me that on a piece of land that my grandfather owns, my uncle who already has a home on that lot is going to start construction on the top floor as well.

Which is a bad thing because the property was meant to be split amongst those 2, i.e my dad and my uncle, on a floor by floor basis since the subdivision doesn’t allow to actually split the land in 2.

However apparently if my uncle builds on it, my dad will somehow lose claim on the property. Don’t ask me how, I’m not really sure.

So, he asks me for money.

He had a couple other suggestions.

I am skeptical of this situation and say I’ll either buy the property outright or they (my uncle and his wife and kids) can buy us out.

Apparently, they can’t pay for half the property and they can’t move till they get their daughter married, again stupid freaking Indian stuff, very hard to explain.

Because of this, i refuse to give my dad money to construct the floor. I instead suggest to him that he should sell one of his other plots, that he owns (in my name, I’m willing to give him full power of attorney since he actually bought it) but he refuses to sell, without an explanation other than, it’ll go up in value.

So i decline to give him money to invest. AITA?

His dad asked, and he said no. He offered alternatives, and his dad turned them down. I think he tried, but it didn’t work out.

Let’s see what Reddit suggests.

This person has questions.

But another person is on OP’s side.

Here’s a suggestion.

Another person might consider giving the dad the money.

OP did leave out important details like how much money his dad is asking for and whether or not he could afford to give it to him.

It doesn’t seem like he should feel obligated to give his dad the money. He suggested several other options. Maybe his dad will think about the alternative solutions and choose one of those instead.

But really, the uncle is the problem here. He’s trying to steal something that’s supposed to be set aside for OP’s dad!
