Over time it’s common for friendships to evolve, and long-term friendships certainly involve incremental growth on the side of both parties. After all, we change during our lives, and as we get older certain aspects of our life develop to the point that our friendships either need to flex or they will break entirely. But strong friendships are generally resilient and overcome such barriers through good communication and grace when one or both friends makes mistakes.

And though the guy and the girl in this story have been friends for a long time, their friendship is just that – two people who are friends in a platonic way. But as with most people of opposite genders in this situation, folk sometimes make assumptions or question if and when the relationship will evolve into something more. The guy is anticipating that when one of his friend at the party asks – but he was not prepared for how his best friend would respond.

Read on to find out what happened.

AITA for leaving my friend at a party because she insulted me?

Last weekend my best woman friend Tina (21, female) and I (21, male), went to a party. Tina and I have been friends since our freshman year, and we’ve become best friends.

At the party, Tina got pretty hammered – not completely trashed, but she was pretty drunk. We were sitting down talking to a couple of our mutual friends and somehow we get on to the topic of dating.

One of our friends asks us why me and Tina never got together since we’re such good friends.

Without missing a beat, Tina says and I quote: “Ugh! Ewww, God ******* no”.

Let’s see how he reacted to Tina’s apparent repulsion.

That took me and everyone a little by surprise. It wasn’t even a “no he’s like my brother” kind of way. This was of pure disgust, like I was repulsive.

I said “well **** you too” kind of in a joking way, but actually serious. I think she realised what she said and tried to walk it back “he’s just like my friend, I don’t even want to think about it.”

No one really bought it, but I guess we all laughed it off.

I was pretty insulted, so I just decided to leave. The only problem was that I drove us to the party and I was Tina’s ride back.

Read on to find out how Tina reacted when she realised he was gone.

An hour later Tina calls me and says thanks for leaving her. I say thanks for calling me ugly.

She said that I was an ******* for leaving her at the party and having to find another way home. She told me to get over myself and that she was just kidding. I just hung up.

Not gonna lie, I’ve been hitting the gym hard since then, and Tina hasn’t really talked to me since and I don’t really want to anyway.

I don’t have feelings for Tina, but her words were like a slap in the face. Especially since I don’t have much success in the dating department. I’ve been thinking that maybe I just got in my feelings too much and maybe I overreacted.

AITA?

Regardless of whether or not he had feelings for Tina, it’s clear that her words hurt him – and why wouldn’t they, someone he considers to be his best friend has basically told everyone loudly that he’s disgusting.

It would hurt anyone’s self-esteem to hear something like that, and it’s no wonder that he wanted to leave.

Maybe it would have been better to check she had a ride home first, but honestly, we’re all allowed to look after ourselves especially in a state of hurt and distress.

Let’s see what folks on Reddit said about this.

This person thought that, given they were at a party with lots of mutual friends, leaving her at the party wasn’t a problem.

While others thought Tina was out of order for what she said.

Meanwhile, this Redditor completely understood his choices.

When you consider yourself close to someone – even in a platonic sense – it’s usually safe to assume that they have at least some respect for you and your feelings. So it’s no wonder that he was upset about the way Tina treated him, since it showed a complete and utter disregard for his feelings and his self-esteem. Sure she might not consider him attractive and be friends with him because she likes who he is as a person, but the fact that she was so rude and disgusted really shows a lack of respect. Either that, or she was overcompensating for her own feelings toward him, that she perhaps knows aren’t requited.

Regardless, when she woke up the next morning and remembered what she’d said to upset her best friend, she should definitely have apologised. But she didn’t – instead she continued to be the victim in the situation. She lacked any regard for how she’d made him feel and instead fixated on the fact that he didn’t take her home. That shows that really, she hasn’t got any empathy or care for how he made her feel. Perhaps she’s not the friend he thought she was.
