Even if you are a very private person, it is a good idea to at least be polite to your neighbors since you have to live around them all the time.
What would you do if your landlord’s wife asked your nanny to hold onto a key while she was out of town, but you told her that she couldn’t because it wasn’t your problem, and now your landlord won’t renew your lease?
That is what happened to the guy in this story, and he wants to keep his apartment, but also doesn’t want to interact or be courteous with his neighbors at all.
This guy definitely seems like a jerk, so it is no surprise that his landlord doesn’t want to renew the lease. Read through the full story below and see what you think.
AITA for not giving a **** about my neighbor?
I am a single 42 year old guy living in a comfortable apartment.
He has a great living arrangement here.
I live with my nanny (Nana Rose) who took care of me since I was young, and since she has no family left and no one to support her, I offered her a job as my housekeeper.
She has her own room and takes care of all the household chores including shopping since my work keeps me busy that I don’t have time to do those.
Why is he being rude about this?
I was smoking outside when one of my neighbors approached me to ask Nana Rose to handle her their key to their apartment since they are going about to go a vacation somewhere for a few days and one of their relatives is supposed to come over to look after their house.
I told them “No. it’s not my business nor my responsibility.” And frankly, I stand on my ground. She was taken aback for a second then said “okay,” then went to ask another neighbor.
He upset the wrong person, it seems.
I figured Nana Rose must be friends with her. I don’t really know. Nana Rose talks to people and knows the neighbors.
A month later, when I was about to renew my lease in the apartment, the owner refused to do so. Turns out the woman was the wife of the landlord.
Why would you want to have a jerk living in your apartment building?
I don’t really care about other people’s business and I didn’t know. I think it was unfair that I didn’t get to renew my lease just because I refused to do a favor from the landlord’s wife.
The landlord doesn’t like someone who is rude to my wife. His wife was a little hurt but I didn’t say anything bad? I did not insult her? I just said no because I don’t want to do it. I guess she is a sensitive woman.
Actions have consequences.
Apparently, he said his wife was this friendly woman who gives people baked goods and invites them to small gatherings. I don’t really go to those since I have no business and it is a waste of time for me. I don’t care about my neighbors.
This sucks since this apartment is nice and walking distance to my place of work.
When you are intentionally rude to people, you should expect that they won’t want you around.
I still stand on my decision. I don’t even know this woman, so why should she approach me for favors? I mind my own business.
AITA?
He seems proud that he doesn’t care about his neighbors, but then upset that they don’t want him around.
Let’s see what the people in the comments have to say about what is happening to him.
Legally, he didn’t do anything wrong. As a neighbor, however, he did.
Being kind is not a lot to ask for.
This commenter suspects that the key issue is just one of many complaints. I think they are right.
Holding a key for someone is basically nothing.

The neighbor didn’t even ask him for anything. She only asked his nanny for a tiny favor.
When you make it clear that you don’t care about your neighbors, don’t be surprised when they don’t care about you. This guy is clearly very abrasive and hard to live around, so why would he expect his landlord to want to renew the lease?
Actions have consequences, and that is exactly what he is learning.
