If your parent asked you for your social security number, would you want to know why they need it, or would you simply tell them what it is?

In this story, one teen is in this situation, and she doesn’t think it’s unreasonable to know why her dad needs to know the information before she tells him the answer. However, her dad turns it into an argument, and now, she’s crying in her room.

AITA for asking my dad why?

So I’m (19) kinda mad because it seems like I’m not allowed to question anything my dad(50) does.

I got home from work and my dad was still up.

I sat on our porch to decompress and talk to him since he was sitting and smoking a cigarette.

This is an odd question.

After telling him about work and a few minutes of silence he asked for my social security number.

I thought it was a random question so I asked why? In a polite but questioning tone.

He did not like this question and started to go off.

Why won’t the dad answer the question?

Me: Why?

D: Don’t worry about why, send me your ssn.

Me: I think its fair for me to ask what my information is being used for.

D: For the same reason I asked you last year.

Yikes! Dad could’ve just explained up front.

Me: I don’t remember why you asked for it last year.

D: It doesn’t freaking matter but if your going to be a jerk its so I can add you to our health insurance but never mind get your own.

Me: ok why didn’t you just say it was for the health insurance?

D: Because it doesn’t freaking matter, what do you now trust me?

OP feels really upset.

Thats basically how the conversation went and now I’m typing this in my room because I don’t know if it was a bad thing to do so.

I’m almost in tears writing this.

OP’s dad has anger issues. If the answer was health insurance, he should’ve just said that instead of getting angry.

She was cautious, and that’s a good thing, even with her dad. Actually, especially with her dad. Maybe he really does need her social security number for insurance, but he could’ve just said that. The fact that he got so angry makes me wonder if he’s hiding something.

All he had to do was answer the question.
