Once kids get to a certain age, it’s time to give them a little dose of reality.
Now, I’m not saying that you have to throw them out in the street or anything like that, but it’s a good character-building exercise to teach them some responsibility and to show them that you’re not always going to let them do whatever they want, whenever they want.
The dad who wrote this story has done a lot of nice (and expensive) things for his son, but he finally established some rules now that he’s 18-years-old.
Is he being unreasonable?

AITA for only getting one hotel room?
“In the past year I spent $1,000 to take my son and his friend to see a comedian and then shopping at Mall of America during the same trip.
He did pay for his and his friend’s tickets to the show but I paid for the gas to drive out of state, hotel room, food, and some of the shopping as well as using vacation days from work.
He’s really diggin’ deep!
He purchased tickets to a concert and I paid for the fuel, the lodging, and the food for him and his friend. This was about $500.
Now he purchased tickets to see Comic-Con out of state and him and his friend are just freshly turned 18. Since they didn’t have a ride and they won’t be able to rent a hotel they didn’t have any actual plans on what they were going to do.
He had to be honest with them.
I said I could not afford any longer to keep spending money on his excursions. I was happy to pay for the gas and drive them but he would have to pay for the hotel room for us all to stay in.
Originally, they had thought of taking Uber from our home town to Chicago (about $250 each way) and uber/taxi from whatever hotel they could find that rented to 18 year olds back and forth to Comic Con.
We’ve got one hotel room with two beds and him and his friend are sharing a bed and myself and my partner are sharing a bed.
Well…what are you gonna do?
My son is very upset that they don’ t have their own hotel room.
He says it’s perfectly normal that they should expect their own room. He expected me to get my own hotel room for the trip and thinks I’m being unreasonable.
When I rented the room, I made it very clear that I was getting one room.
I made the comment that myself and my partner could just go hang out and do stuff in Chicago during the day while he and his friend were at Comic-Con.
My son took that to insinuate that I was getting two rooms for some reason.
I personally don’t think that I am and he is convinced that I am.
I should add that I’ve also paid for him to go to Costa Rica twice for over 2 weeks each trip, and to Europe traveling Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, France, and Italy twice in the past year.
AITA for renting only one hotel room?”

Well, his son is 18 now, so it’s time to start paying at least a little bit of his own way.
Hey, your parents can’t foot the bill for everything forever.
Grow up a bit, kid!
His son needs to start paying his own way if he wants to keep taking trips like this!
