Friendly joking around is supposed to stay fun for everyone involved, not end with someone’s belongings getting destroyed.
One teen found himself in a tough situation after a lighthearted joke between friends spiraled into his cap getting snatched, kicked across the floor, and eventually smashed against a wall during a chase.
When he confronted the friend responsible, instead of getting an apology, he got hit with “What should I have done then,” like breaking the cap was somehow the only option available.
Things got worse when another friend insisted the damage wasn’t even real, despite visible buckling that permanently warped the frame, and spent the rest of the day mocking him for being upset.
Keep reading for the full scoop.
AITA for caring about my cap
Okay, so me and my friend often joke with each other, like making fun of what we say or if we say anything funny.
But most recently, this teasing got taken too far.
I joked about the way he said a thing, then he took my cap and threw it away. I went after it to go get it and come back, then my other friend ran towards my cap that was on the floor and kicked it away.
Then I said, “Stop, give me my cap.” Then he took it, ran away, and I ran after him. Then he kind of ran beside a wall and held the cap against the wall so it kind of got buckled.
This didn’t end well for the cap — and the owner wasn’t happy.
So the brim and the front frame of it got buckled and smashed.
So I got a little ticked off because I asked my friend why he took the cap and kicked it, and he said, “What should I have done then?” Then I got mad because what the heck do you mean “what should I have done.”
His friends quickly started downplaying the damage.
Then my other friend looked at my cap while I was trying to fix it and said, “Omg, it’s not even broken or smashed.” Then I said, “Yes, it is.” I showed him the damage, and he said, “Dude, that ain’t broken.”
But it was, because it had this buckle that wouldn’t go away, since my other friend smashed it, so the plastic inside broke.
His friends didn’t seem to care at all about his feelings.
Then, the whole day, he kept saying, “It isn’t broken,” “Are you gonna cry now,” and it just ticked me off.
So AITA for not wanting my cap broken. (Btw the cap was 3 weeks old, and my father bought it.)
Maybe this guy needs to find some better friends.
What did Reddit have to say?
This could all come down to a lack of maturity.
This is just plain gaslighting.
Real friends don’t behave this way.
The friends’ questions all had very obvious answers.
There’s a pretty obvious line between joking around and destroying something someone’s dad bought them three weeks ago.
Real friends don’t treat respect like it’s optional. All of this may have started as a joke, but when it ends in someone being legitimately upset, any decent person would know that’s a sign to stop what you’re doing and reevaluate.
This isn’t overreacting; it’s just simply reacting.
