Asking someone to take over a chore sometimes means letting them do it their way.

When his partner said she no longer had time to handle their rent payments, this man agreed to take over.

But instead of driving to the bank for a cashier’s check, he planned to write a personal one.

Well, that didn’t sit well with her, and she suggested changing his bank account to avoid fees for certified checks.

He didn’t see the point of opening a new account, but standing his ground only made her angrier.

AITA for insisting that I pay rent with a personal check instead of a cashier’s check?

The SO took on the responsibility of paying rent. A task she completed by driving to the bank and getting a certified check.

I get a text from her this morning explaining she doesn’t have time to drive to the bank and pay rent anymore, and I should do it because I have more free time during the week. No big deal, right? I have no problem doing that.

Except I told her my preferred method is just to simply write a personal check since my bank won’t give me certified checks for free. She had a huge issue with me paying rent by personal check from my own account, as she claims the certified check is more secure and that I should upgrade my checking account to get free certified checks.

Frustrated, he stood his ground.

Problem is, the bank won’t let me just upgrade a checking account—the only option is to open a completely new one, and I would be doing so just to pay rent in my SO’s preferred manner.

I stood my ground and told the SO that I have no problem walking over to pay rent, but I can only do so with a personal check, which is my preferred method since I have some on hand and it’s perfectly secure.

Last text from her today says, “**** it and **** you. I’ll handle it myself, per usual.”

AITA?

Yikes. Why does everything have to be her way?

Let’s check out what the readers over at Reddit think about how he handled it.

This is what he should’ve done.

According to this comment, they need to have a talk.

That may be what he needs to do.

She needs to let this one go.

If the landlord accepts his check and he pays on time, then who really cares how he pays?

But her reaction makes it sound like there’s more going on here than a disagreement about rent.

And if that’s the case, it may be time for them to have a heart-to-heart about what’s really bothering her.
