Whether you’ve been friends for just a few months or decades, there’s something nice about a visit from a buddy. That kind of social bonding experience is something that some of us don’t have a lot of time for in our hectic working lives, but a drink at the pub, a weekend brunch, or a few days’ stay at one of your houses can be really special, a kind of reset of your life as you chat and have fun together with someone who you see eye to eye with.
So the guy in this story was looking forward to a cross-country visit from his college friend. But over time it became quite clear that their friendship was becoming less viable as the years went by. And whether that was because she’d become more abrasive or he’d become less tolerant of her hurtful remarks, eventually – inevitably – he was going to snap. And when he did, somehow he got cast as the bad guy.
Read on to find out what happened.
AITA for immediately giving my visiting friend the boot from my apartment for insulting me?
My friend was visiting me from the east coast for a weekend.
She and I have been friends since college days, but I was starting to get VERY fed up over certain remarks she made.
The final straw was when she saw pictures of some girl I was going on a date with from OkCupid.
Unfortunately, his friend had a history of this kind of behaviour.
And this was NOT the first time she’s made these types of remarks.
Another time, she said she didn’t expect me and this one girl to be together because she was a knockout and I was “nerdy” (in this context, this is an insult).
Even worse? She made the “out of your league” remark around my coworker who was with us in my apartment!!
He said “wow”, to which I had to say “I’m sorry, this must be her first time.”
Let’s see how he reacted to his friend’s remarks.
So I then told her “that is unacceptable to say….do not EVER disrespect me like that again” and told her to leave.
My guy friend thought I was being cruel by doing this since she had nowhere else to stay but look, hotels exist! And if I were someone’s guest, I would know better than to subtly put down my host…especially around other people I don’t know.
She and I were just friends and she wasn’t at all romantically interested so no those comments she made were not “negs” or whatever people call them nowadays.
Personally, I found these remarks unnecessarily rude and inappropriate and don’t tolerate that at all. And I told her about this in the past.
AITA?
Really, is this woman actually his friend at all?
Because friends are there to support you and help build your confidence, not take it all away.
It’s no wonder he was so sick of her behaviour that he kicked her out.
Let’s see what folks on Reddit made of this.
This person thought he did exactly the right thing.
While others thought that his friend was nothing more than a bully.
If you enjoyed this story, check out this post about a woman whose family says she’s selfish for not wanting strangers living in her trailer.
Meanwhile this Redditor jokingly pointed out just how ridiculous the woman’s behaviour was.
Maybe she was just a bully who enjoys putting other people down. Perhaps she frames it as a ‘reality check’ that does them a service. Maybe she’s an insecure woman who is bothered by the fact that she doesn’t have a partner and feels the need to put other folk down accordingly. Perhaps she’s jealous because she has unrequited feelings toward this man. Or maybe she’s territorial towards her friend and despite not being romantically involved, views him as ‘hers’ and doesn’t like the idea of another woman – particularly not an attractive woman – getting in the way of their dynamic.
Whatever it is, it’s not friendship. It’s some weird power imbalance in which she says mean things and he gets hurt. Only – and she wasn’t expecting this – he’s grown a backbone over the years and now he’s unwilling to allow himself to be bullied by a woman on the pure basis that she’s a guest. Because whether or not someone has travelled cross-country to visit you, they don’t automatically get a free pass to insult you. She needs to learn how to treat other humans, especially those she considered friends.
