Being happy for a friend and being subjected to a marathon bragging sesh about their salary (which is higher than yours ever will be) are two very different things.
One woman found herself stuck between the two after her friend landed a high-paying job and started bringing it up constantly, from bonuses to stock options, at nearly every hangout.
During a group dinner, she finally asked her friend to dial it back, gently pointing out that not everyone wanted a play-by-play of her finances over food.
Her friend didn’t take it well, accusing her of jealousy and trying to overshadow her success.
Now the friendship is strained, and their friend group has split over who was wrong.

AITA for telling my friend she needs to stop bragging about her salary?
My friend Jess got a new job last month. It pays really well. She tells everyone about it.
Every time we hang out, she brings up her salary, her bonus, her stock options.
But lately, she feels like Jess is starting to take things too far.
I’m happy for her. I really am. But it’s constant. And honestly, it’s making me feel bad about my own job.
Last week we were out with a group. She started talking about how much she makes.
I said, “Jess, maybe not right now. Not everyone wants to hear about salaries at dinner.”
Jess didn’t get the hint. Instead, she doubled down.
She got defensive. She said, “I’m just proud of myself. You should be happy for me.”
I said, “I am happy for you. But there’s a time and place. It’s making people uncomfortable.”
She said I was jealous and trying to dim her shine.
Now she’s not talking to me. Some friends agree with me. Some say I should’ve just let her talk.
AITA?
Sounds like Jess needed a wake-up call.
What did Reddit have to say?
This commenter calls Jess’ behavior just plain tacky.
There’s such a thing as too much when it comes to these kinds of conversations.
“Exhausting” is the word this user chooses to describe Jess’ behavior.

The line between sharing and oversharing can be pretty fine depending on the context.
Nobody told Jess to stop celebrating her win, she just got asked to… spread the celebration out a little.
That distinction seems to have gotten completely lost the moment Jess decided bitter jealousy was the real motive.
Honestly, Jess needed that nudge. Constantly bragging about yourself can become a nasty habit when left unchecked.
The problem isn’t the success itself, it’s not knowing when to stop talking about it.
