Imitation is supposed to be flattering, but somewhere around the third identical purchase, flattery starts feeling a lot more like surveillance.

One homeowner noticed her neighbor replicating nearly every small addition she made to her own home, matching hanging plants, an identical motion sensor light in almost the same spot, even a patio storage box that showed up within a week of her mentioning it.

What really tipped things from odd coincidence into straight up unease wasn’t the copying itself, it was learning her neighbor had specifically asked for exact store names and model numbers.

This is probably going to sound petty, but it’s starting to get strange.

A while back I put a couple of hanging plants by my front door because the entrance looked kind of bare.

Then the neighbor launched into some concerning behavior.

Maybe a month later, my neighbor put up two almost identical ones.

Then I got one of those little motion sensor lights for the side of the house after someone kept leaving the gate open. A few days later they had one in almost the exact same spot.

I didn’t think much of either thing on its own. People buy the same stuff all the time.

Just when this homeowner was about to get over it, it happened again.

Then I mentioned to another neighbor that I was thinking about putting a small storage box on my patio. A week later, my neighbor had one sitting outside.

The neighbor soon made their motive even more clear.

The part that made me notice it more is that they actually asked me where I got the plants and the light.

Not in a normal “hey, that’s nice” way either. They wanted the exact store and model.

Now the homeowner is starting to get a little freaked out.

Now I’m starting to notice these little things more and it’s getting uncomfortable. It’s not like they’re doing anything technically wrong, which is why I feel a little ridiculous even being bothered by it.
