Doing something nice for a kid should be simple, but somehow it rarely stays that way once parents get involved.
A woman known for crafting handmade costumes for her partner’s niece found that out firsthand after the little girl asked for a cotton candy costume months in advance and stuck with the idea the whole time.
She made it, delivered it, and watched the kid’s face light up exactly the way she’d hoped.
Her mom’s reaction told a completely different story, one focused less on the costume and more on being left out of the decision entirely.
A sweet gesture quickly turned into a debate over boundaries nobody expected to have.

I (22F) am good at sewing and crafts.
My partner’s niece “Abby” (5F) has had handmade Halloween costumes from me for a few years now, as well as birthday outfits.
Abby was very clear about what she wanted to be this year and she soon enlisted her help in a sewing project.
She knows this, and is now at the age where she’s putting in requests herself instead of her mom coming to me.
This year, she wants to be a piece of cotton candy for Halloween. She’s been asking me about it since July and hasn’t changed her mind.
It was a simple costume to make, so I started early and brought it to her last week. Abby loves it.
Not everyone was so thrilled though.
But Abby’s mom is not happy. She doesn’t want her to be a piece of cotton candy because she thinks she’ll “get made fun of” for the unusual outfit.
She is mad that I didn’t ask her beforehand. I assumed she knew because Abby has been talking about it for so long now.

This parent should give the aunt credit for showing up for a kid who clearly adores her.
The mom’s frustration about being left out of the loop makes sense on its own, but her actual reasoning doesn’t hold up nearly as well, since “she might get teased for being cotton candy” says a lot more about the mom’s anxiety than anything Abby’s ever going to face at school.
This mom really needs to allow her daughter to enjoy a little whimsy at Halloween.
