Birthday celebrations should allow people to spend time with the friends they choose.
In this story, a teenage girl planned a two-night hotel sleepover with her friends for her 16th birthday.
But her mom suddenly required her to bring her 14-year-old and 18-year-old cousins.
She worried the cousins would feel awkward and make it harder for everyone to talk comfortably.

AITAH for telling my mom I don’t want my cousins at my birthday sleepover?
I’m turning 16 (F) in October, and I asked my mom if I can have a 2-night sleepover with my friends at a hotel.
She agreed, and I started planning everything out.
This past weekend, she dropped on me that I am required to bring my cousins.
Both girls are 14 and 18.
The 14-year-old is a little immature, and the 18-year-old just isn’t a social person and makes everything awkward.
This teenage girl didn’t want to invite her cousins.
I expressed to her that it would feel uncomfortable with them there because none of my friends know them.
We also wouldn’t be able to speak comfortably because I don’t tell my cousins any of my business.
And my friends sure wouldn’t tell theirs.
I also said that it’s my party, and I should be able to choose who I bring.
Her mom told her they were coming no matter what.
She told me I was being selfish and that they’re coming whether I like it or not.
The whole thing is genuinely making me not want a party.
It’s gonna be awkward for them and everyone else.
They will be singled out of every conversation because they don’t have any experiences with us.
AITAH?
Yikes! This honestly sounds demotivating for someone who only wanted to enjoy her birthday with close friends.
I think we can’t really force anyone to spend their birthday with relatives they’re not really close with.
OP was reasonable to want her birthday sleepover to include people she actually felt comfortable around.

Short and simple.
Birthdays are meant to be celebrated with people close to you.
