Hmmm, this story is kind of a tough one…
On one hand, I can totally understand wanting to change your name if you never really liked it in the first place.
On the other hand, I can also see why a mom or a dad would be upset that their child would want to change the name they gave them.
That’s the conundrum at the heart of this story, and the woman who wrote it has decided that she’s enough of the name she was given at birth.

I’ve lived in Great Britain for 17 years. I moved here with my parents when I was 12, not speaking a word of English.
It’s tough to be a kid with a weird name…
Throughout most of my adult life, I was bullied for my birth name, which means something rude in the UK. However, it’s common and completely normal in my country.
A week ago, I became a UK citizen and was given the option to choose a different name.
Here come the waterworks…
My mother, however, completely overreacted, crying and then giving me the silent treatment for nine days.
She said I couldn’t change my name because she had given it to me, despite me telling her for the past 15 years that I’ve been bullied for it.
Am I in the wrong for going ahead and changing my name to something more fitting for the country I want to spend the rest of my life in?
