Nothing says confidence quite like assuming a total stranger works retail based on vibes alone.
One woman found herself in exactly that situation while digging through a chaotic 70%-off clearance pile, when another shopper turned to her and asked her to check a price like she was on the clock.
She calmly pointed out that she had no idea, suggesting the woman check the tag herself, only to get accused of bad customer service in return.
That’s when she flipped the script, asking the woman what on earth made her think she was an employee in the first place.
The reaction that followed was priceless.

How much are these? Can you check for me?
I’m taking a look at a table that is filled with clothes, and it has a 70% off sign. It was already in the afternoon, so the clothes were very disorganized and were left in a huge pile.
I was digging around the pile, and there were 2 other ladies also looking.
That’s when she was suddenly recruited to help a confused shopper.
All of a sudden, one of the ladies turned to me and asked me how much a pair of pants were and if I could check for her.
The other person at the table and I immediately locked eyes because what the heck. I don’t work there.
She tried to play it cool, but the other shopper started to go off on her.
So I calmly said to her, “I don’t know. What does the original price say? Just ask Google.”
She then gets an attitude and says, “Well, you’re not being very helpful. Bad customer service.”
That’s when she decided she needed to be a little more direct.
I say, “Ma’am, I’m digging through the same pile of clothes as you are. What makes you think I’m an employee?”
Her mouth dropped, and then she walked straight to the checkout counter.
The other lady just giggled, and we continued digging through the pile.
Looking back, she can’t really understand what the confusion was all about.
I often wonder what it was exactly about me that made her believe I worked there. I was wearing a Sunday dress. I had my bag crossed over my body. I also had shopping bags at my feet. I guess I’ll never know 😆
What a kooky story.

There’s a name for this phenomenon.
You never really know what’s going through someone’s head.
Some of these people clearly don’t have the best social skills.

This user has a good tip.
Nothing exposes someone’s assumptions quite like a calm question they clearly weren’t expecting.
This woman didn’t even have to raise her voice, she just pointed out the obvious and let the other shopper connect the dots herself.
Getting called out for “bad customer service” while digging through the same clearance pile is honestly one of the more confidently wrong moments you’ll witness in a retail store.
