It’s one thing to forget something every once in a while. But constantly relying on someone else to have everything you need gets old fast.
One woman has been dealing with exactly that with a close friend who never seems to bring much with her.
Whenever they go somewhere, her friend ends up asking for whatever she forgot to pack.
At first, the woman didn’t mind sharing. But after a day trip where her friend ignored several reminders and still needed half the things in her bag, she finally snapped.
Now, she’s refusing to share, and her friend is not happy about it.
Read on to see who you think is in the wrong here.
AITA for not letting my friend use my stuff anymore?
I (23F) am friends with Wilma (25F). We’ve known each other for years, see each other at least once a week, and are pretty close.
There’s just one thing that really irks me: she’s suuuper unprepared.
She’s a “grab your keys and go” kinda gal, while I like being prepared.
Apparently, Wilma is never prepared.
That’s totally fine. What annoys me is that I feel like she’s only able to be this unprepared because she relies on me being prepared.
She never brings a purse or bag, just her phone and keys. Meanwhile, I’ve basically become her personal convenience store.
Whenever we’re out, it’s “Do you have lotion?” “Can I use your lip gloss?” “Do you have tissues/gum/whatever?”
I always shared because we’re friends, but lately, it’s gotten really annoying.
Within the first hour, Wilma proved her right.
Two weeks ago, we took a day trip to a vineyard. It was hot and humid, and we’d be outside all day.
When I picked her up, she had no bag. I specifically asked if she wanted to bring sunscreen, a hairbrush because of the humidity, or blister patches since her shoes always give her blisters.
She said nope. Didn’t need any of it.
Well, within the first hour, she asked for my sunscreen, a hair tie because hers snapped, and my hairbrush.
Fed up, she snapped on her.
Two hours later: “Do you have blister patches?”
That’s when I snapped. I told her: I’m not your **** drugstore. I carry my handbag everywhere while you bring nothing because you know I’ll have it. I’m done letting you use my stuff.
She apologized, but nothing changed. She’s still just as unprepared.
The only difference is that I’ve actually stuck to what I said.
After an encounter at brunch, they’re not speaking.
Last week, we went for brunch. She spilled something on her white shirt and asked for my stain remover pen.
I said no. You wore a white shirt to brunch. You could’ve brought one yourself.
Afterwards, we went window shopping, and it started raining. She wanted to use the tiny spare umbrella I had in my bag. Again, I said no. I’d literally told her it was going to rain.
She got really mad and left. Now she’s not talking to me.
Now, she’s unsure how to feel about the whole thing.
And I genuinely don’t understand why. Yes, her shirt has a stain now, and she got wet. But both would’ve happened if she’d gone out alone too. I didn’t cause either situation.
I just stopped using my preparedness to fix them for her.
Our other friend Sia thinks I’m being difficult and mean, so now I’m wondering…
AITA?
Eek! It’s easy to see why she’s so upset, but maybe that was pretty harsh.
Let’s take a look at what advice the folks over at Reddit have to offer.
This is equally as messed up.
This reader would draw the line at lip balm.
This seems to be pretty spot-on.
If you enjoyed this story, check out this post about a man who had to sprint to the bathroom the moment he got home, then emerged to find his partner upset he didn’t greet her properly.
It sounds like she did indeed.
One person cannot carry a whole friendship.
If Wilma wants to keep going out without bringing anything, then she also has to deal with what happens when she needs something.
After being warned more than once, it’s not fair to keep expecting someone else to fix every little problem for her.
Let’s hope they can move on from this and come out better friends on the other side.
