Losing a parent is hard. But what people don’t always talk about is how difficult it can be to help the parent who’s left behind.

One woman learned this pretty quickly after letting her mom move in following her dad’s death.

At first, she thought she was simply helping her through a really difficult time. But as the months went on, her mom started depending on her more and more.

Then, one day, the woman asked for a little privacy on her day off, and her mom completely lost it.

Now, she’s wondering if helping her mom has gone too far and whether it’s time to ask her to move out.

Read on to see what you think about this whole thing.

AITA for evicting my mom after my dad passed?

I (F30) let my mom (F63) move in with me and my partner (M32) of 10 years. For the story, I will call my mom Terry.

Around 2020 is when my parents retired and did whatever they wanted and started traveling.

A couple of years later is when the cancer got bad, and they settled where they last stopped until he passed in 2025.

Unfortunately, Terry started taking advantage of the situation.

It’s been almost a year of Terry living with us, and it’s honestly been ****. What I thought was me helping her was, in her view, expectations of me.

It started with her tagging along to every appointment that I had and me taking her where she needed to go, to now being her Uber driver. I thought I was crazy at first, but my partner would offer to take her where she wanted, but Terry said that he works all week and that he needs to rest on his day off.

It all came to a head when I was home one day with the door closed. It was my day off after picking up a ton of doubles, so I wanted to be by myself while I chilled and listened to some music.

Then, Terry went off on her.

Terry comes in and sits in the room with me and talks to me about dinner. I say okay and ask if she can close the door when she leaves.

SHE. FLIPPED. OUT.

She started yelling at me about how she never gets to leave the apartment and how she is in her room all day and how she raised us kids and cooked and cleaned and how dare I not talk to her when she wants.

Frustrated, she now wants to kick Terry out.

I didn’t know what to do or how to react. I was immediately thinking, what did I do wrong?

I tried talking to Terry about it immediately because I didn’t understand what it was that caused her to react that way. It comes down to the fact that she wants someone to replace the companionship my dad was for her and how he took care of her.

Since then, Terry refuses to talk to me but acts just fine in front of my partner.

AITA?

Yikes! Situations like this are never easy to navigate.

Let’s check out what the folks over at Reddit think she should do.

According to this comment, neither of them are perfect.

Here’s someone who thinks the mother needs therapy.

For this person, they’re both right to feel how they feel.

Great point.

The fact that she calls her mother “Terry” in the story is very interesting.

That almost makes it seem like they’ve always kind of had a strained relationship.

Either way, kicking her out should probably be the last resort.

The better way to handle it would be to have a serious conversation and make sure her mom understands exactly what needs to change.
