Her Roommate Wants to Let Two Extra People Stay for a Month. She’s Drawing the Line at Free Rent

Boy, do I remember these days…

When I was in college, I lived in a big house with a bunch of friends and there would always be a straggler or two who needed a place to crash for a few weeks..or a few months…

Well, you can probably guess how that situation turned out.

The next thing we knew, a guy was living on our couch for almost a year!

Good thing we were young and didn’t really care.

But the woman who wrote this story ain’t having it!

Check out what she had to say about the frustrating living situation she’s dealing with.

AITA for suggesting our temporary housemates pay rent?

“I live in a shared house with 3 others that are officially on the lease.

One of them has his girlfriend staying with him in his room for 6 months – she is not on the lease but splitting the monthly price of his room with him for the time that she is staying.

This was already negotiated ahead of time since obviously having someone stay that is not on the lease isn’t technically allowed and does take up more space in communal areas etc even if they are sharing a room.

But she was very forthcoming about paying her share and agreeing to our house rules so we all agreed that would be okay.

More people are starting to show up…

Recently, another one of our housemates has told us that her boyfriend and his friend are unable to move into their new place for another month and that she would like them to move in with us for the next month.

We are all really good friends however it became clear that she had already told them that it was all good before even asking us in the first place, even pitching it as a favor and that they wouldn’t have to pay any rent.

I disagreed with this and suggested that they at least split a months worth between them, which she found unfair and awkward since she would then have to go back on her word.

Her argument is that her boyfriend will be sharing a room with her and therefore shouldn’t have to pay any rent but would contribute to bills/things for the house etc.

This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense…

She then said that his friend (who is not as close to the rest of us) could pay but we would have to organize all of that since she feels too awkward to be a part of it which is seems pretty unfair.

To me, a month is a long time and shared room or not, an extra two people in a house where only 4 are legally on the lease not only takes up space but puts us at risk of getting into trouble.

It also seems unfair that our other housemates pay and her partner wouldn’t, even if it is just for a month.

She’s not sure how to handle this situation.

I’m holding my ground but also don’t want to jeopardize our friendship since this is one of my closest friends.

Would I be a jerk if I continue to insist he pays?

My other housemates agree with me but I seem to be the only one pushing it at the moment which is pretty exhausting.

Let me know if this is worth it, my gut says it’s the fair (and pretty normal?) thing to do, but I also don’t want to end up in a seriously awkward situation as living with these people for the next year!”

She’s definitely not doing anything wrong!

This is a pretty unreasonable request.

She shouldn’t budge on this!

This is starting to become a very crowded house!
