Sometimes, it’s not the job itself that makes you want to quit.

For one gas station worker, it was the customers.

Or more specifically, it was one regular customer who always seemed to make everyone else’s life miserable.

He had plenty of money and loved talking about it, but somehow he still found reasons to complain every time he came in.

Over time, the worker got tired of dealing with his attitude and watching him pick on the younger employees. Eventually, he started wondering why he was putting up with any of it at all, and never clocked back in.

Read on for his full story.

Sometimes it’s not the tasks or coworkers. Sometimes it’s the customers

I’ve walked off many jobs in my life because I just cannot rationalize existing in a place where I’m obviously unhappy.

For example, I worked at a gas station a few years ago. Tiny little operation, about 5-6 total stations under one parent company.

Had a lot of regulars and was a quieter station than I would assume the big-name companies are.

The guy always had some sort of comment to make.

Anyway, I remember this regular customer who was an alcoholic. He owned a local car dealership and would always come in bragging about how much money he had.

Of course, that wouldn’t stop him from complaining about gas prices. He would do ****** things like butter up my manager in the morning when she was there while being absolutely an ******* to those working nights.

Some examples:

“Oh, ‘insert manager’s name’ knows me. She said I could get a discount on gas.”

“Man, I own three cars and run that dealership on so-and-so street. I could go to any different gas station. I don’t need to come here.”

After that encounter, he was just done.

I just remember walking off that shift and thinking to myself, “Why the **** am I working this job where I have to babysit/be a therapist to a drunk ******* who hates his life just because I’m on the employee side of things?”

Never clocked back in again. I hope his marriage fell apart and he stayed on booze. While I know he’ll never know he’s the reason I left, I hope he finds some kind of karma for being such a hate-filled loser.

Also, he would always bully the younger staff (teenagers) because he knew they wouldn’t say ****.

Do you have any stories where customers broke you?

Wow! Customers like that do get old pretty quickly.

Let’s take a look if the people over at Reddit shared any experiences.

This person would break it down like this.

This should’ve happened.

They just want people to care.

Most retail managers would probably agree.

You can only put up with so much before a job just isn’t worth it anymore.

In terms of this customer, he clearly knew he could get away with treating certain employees badly, and that gets old fast.

So, walking away was probably the best thing the worker could’ve done for himself.

No paycheck is worth being miserable every time you clock in.
