Woof!

There’s a time and a place to try to play matchmaker…

And the workplace usually isn’t it!

But some people are determined to try to set folks up…even when it’s not the most appropriate setting.

Check out what this woman had to say about why she’s not too pleased about the situation she found herself in at work.

Get started now!

My (32F) manager is trying to set me (23F) up with her (35M) brother. How do I politely decline without making work awkward?

“I (23F) work in the Quality Department at a university.

There’s a woman here, let’s call her Julie (32F), who is the head of one of the programs. She’s in a higher position than me.

Oh, no!

Recently, Julie decided that she likes me as a match for her older brother (35M). Instead of coming to me directly, she texted a coworker who I’m close with, asking them to act as a middleman and tell me to go out to dinner with her brother.

I am absolutely not interested. For one, he is way too old for me – a 12-year age gap at this stage in my life is a huge deal.

This is weird…

On top of that, the whole setup feels completely inappropriate since she’s a higher-up at my workplace.

I want to decline politely, but I’m really worried about office politics and potential retaliation. I don’t want to damage our professional relationship or create an awkward work environment for myself.

She has to be careful about this…

I also have a feeling that if I give a soft rejection through my coworker, Julie might not give up and could try to confront me about it directly.

How should I (or my coworker) phrase the rejection so that she backs off completely, without her taking it personally or it affecting my job?

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?”
